Clear connection to the China push. Every bit helps.

Cathay livid with Port over the travel deals to the China match advertising deals with rivals China Southern and Singapore.

They'll get over it.

The game was announced in October, Cathay came on board from December 17 so there would have been at least 6-8 weeks where "other" travel partners were being used. Through the PAFC website it's Cathay Pacific.

Some of the flights being offered by alternative carriers are through the AFL travel packages site. They don't seem to be Port Adelaide governed.

Now, where were we?

PORT ADELAIDE has been recognised as a top-20 world leader in sports innovation, thanks to its venture into China and upcoming historic game in Shanghai.

London-based global sports publication Sports Business International recently named Port Adelaide chairman David Koch 11th in the world for innovative development the sports industry.

The judging panel deemed Port Adelaide being the first ever professional foreign team to arrange to play a regular-season game in China as a leading innovation in the ever-changing sporting landscape.

Among the publication’s other top 20 industry-leading world sports influencers were EPL club Leister City’s chief executive Susan Whelan, Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob and Facebook’s head of sports partnerships Dan Reed.

Koch told portadelaidefc.com.au it’s an honour to be recognised by such a reputable publication and it reiterates the significance of the historic game Port Adelaide will host in Shanghai this year.

“For our club to be recognised at this level, among some of the world’s most elite sports innovators, is a humbling accolade for Port Adelaide and our wider China strategy,” he said.

“It’s a testament to the incredible amount of work from many people within the club as well as the support we’ve received from the AFL, our fantastic corporate partners and the Australian and Chinese governments and of course our community who have backed and trusted us along the way.

“Port Adelaide has always challenged, broken new ground and this is just another example of that spirit, only this time it is Port Adelaide on a global stage.

“We’re incredibly excited about our ongoing relationship with China and the opportunities it will bring in continuing to develop and influence the future of our great game.”

Pretty well a full list for Port to pick from in the early trial matches. Dougal Howard looks to be the only player on the list not to be fit for round 1.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PORT Adelaide will enter the internal trial on Family Day next Friday with just three players unavailable due to injury.

Dougal Howard (ACL), Angus Monfries (shoulder) and Jesse Palmer (groin) will all miss the February 17 trial game with injury, while several others will be managed because of workload.

But the news is better for Charlie Dixon (foot) and Logan Austin (leg), with the pair having recently returned to full training and expected to play.

High performance manager Darren Burgess said Dixon would be assessed in the lead-up to Family Day.

“At this stage, (Charlie) will play some role in the intra-club match depending on what we think he needs,” Burgess said.

“Whether that’s half a game or a full game, but then he’ll be available throughout the (JLT Community Series).”

Austin has also returned to full training and will have some game time next Friday, but both he and Dixon would be managed with an aim of being fully fit for Round 1.

Meanwhile, Dougal Howard is making significant progress from his ACL injury and has joined the main group for non-contact drills.

“Doogs is flying,” Burgess said.

“He’s training really well and if anything we’ve held him back a little bit just because he’s a big guy.

“He’s on track for a return around about where we thought, which is between 10 and 12 months from when he did his injury.

“He won’t play in the intra-club or JLT series but he’ll be available pretty quickly after that.”

Angus Monfries continues his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery and is likely to miss the first two JLT Community Series games, but should be available after that.

Jesse Palmer has had some tightness in his groin and has had his training load decreased as a result.

“We’ll use caution with (Jesse) being a young player. He’ll be available for Round 1, but will play a limited role in the JLT series.”

Injury list as at Tuesday 7 February:
Dougal Howard (ACL)
Angus Monfries (shoulder)
Jesse Palmer (groin)

Thoughts on GC wearing their home strip with Chinese national colours?
I would have thought this would have been sorted before agreeing to playing GC.

Bit quiet on the North thread? I see Bones rates the Roo's pretty highly for 2017.

I think you'd find they are behind the scenes, just not publicly. Bit hard to justify asking the home team to wear their away jumper...
