I lived in Melbourne for 10 years and actively chose to return to Adelaide for the lifestyle.
Of course, I'm not a pub and club man, and the attraction was to be able to live in the clean air in the hills yet be within easy reach of a city that is easy to get around in.
(Yes, OK, if you avoid main roads in peak hour - as I can easily do.)
I can live up here in a pleasant environment, and meetings at the Universities, and the Zoos, theatres, restaurants are relatively close by.
Access to my friends and relations is also easy. (I can be at the Tollgate from home in 11 minutes.)
I went to Canberra in the public service, got a heap of transferrable experience, got a redundancy and went to Melbourne to work. Stayed there for 2 years. Worst thing I did was come back.
Melbourne (city) is so vibrant in comparison to Adelaide. Adelaide, when it gets dark has a differnt atmosphere. I'd prefer Melbourne any day but Adelaide is more affordable living wise.
But as I've said, if I could move my family and friends to Melbourne, I'd be there in a flash.
As a footballer, wanting to experience "things", Melbourne, or the eastern seaboard is the place to be.
This is the place to be if you're over 40 (raise kids "affordably"), but if you've got some get up and go, or some drive about you, go to the East. I'm obviously not talking about footballers specifically here, but the "up and comers" are along the East coast. More opportunities, (dare I say) more exposure. I'd want to play for a Melb club if I was from Adelaide. Dunno why, just would.
