So are you going to tell clubs like Adelaide, Port and Freo, who have been around for [i]about[i] that length of time that they have no tradition?

lets add west coast and brisbane who arent much older

without knowing their exact history i'd suggest they were one of the more older clubs in the vfl as from memory north melbourne & hawthorn came from the vfa in the 1920's & fitzroy were very much around then infact i think they went top in 1929

Fitzroy were one of the original clubs when the VFL formed in 1897. And actually were established back in the 1880's IIRC.

On the subject of the Anzac Day match am I the only one who is going to be sick the next time he hears one of these footballers talking about honouring the tradition and sacrifice of the diggers by playing in this game. You are running around a football field for two hours chasing a football - a bit of perspective please.

How much money do the AFL (andtwo clubs involved) make from this game because it's Anzac Day and marketed as such? And how much of that goes to the diggers??

Bit of a monopoly now - I'd say some other Melbourne clubs would be wondering why they can't play on the day.

One player just said "It's a big day for Collingwood and Essendon". Indeed.

The Anzac Day game is for all Australians as much as the Crows is the team for all South Australians.

Yes, and good on 'em. But they've had a fair crack at it for their initiative. Who runs the game?

They make it look like they own the Anzac "brand" from a footballing perspective.

But which part of the 'brand' is it that you object to?

the AFL branding it, or the fact that it's a Collingwood/Essendon 'brand'?

bayman wrote:how only players from 2 of the 16 clubs can win it is beyond me, anzac is AUSTRALIAN (new zealand as well) from a national war effort not from a 'civil war' between essendon & collingwood from 90 years ago, it is outrageous that money is the be all & end all & that is why they play, i think the sanfl have the right idea you EARN IT by being the previous years grand finalists

SHAME SHAME SHAME on this issue to in particularly the afl as they do the programing

if west coast played sydney in melbourne on wednesday i'd think they'd still fill up the stadium
Like it or lump it, this is the 2nd biggest game of the AFL year- non-Essendon/Collingwood supporters love it, because of the fierce rivalry, just like 2 sides at war.
I agree the SANFL has it right, but C'wood & Essendon developed this in the AFL, so they reap the rewards.
It's sour grapes to say it's a disgrace that only 2 sides can compete for the medal- more disgraceful is the ANZAC Medal being awarded for every game.

MW wrote:I'm not fussed with it....they started a tradition that no-one else was doing, good luck to them.
They should not have exclusive rights to the day though, I mean if they want to play another ANZAC day game say in Adelaide or Perth etc then that should be okay.
a very sensible post.

The latter - after all, the logo is red, black and white. Why can't other clubs be part of the tradition?

I prefer the grand final replay concept, a la the SANFL.

I can see thousands turning up for a Kangaroos v Bulldogs game on Anzac Day :?

And - how are Sydney and West Coast going to go playing on Anzac Day in the middle of the week? A grand final rematch would really struggle to work in a national competition.

As I'vce said before, if clubs want to commit to it, they can....

Nothing to stop Sydney playing Melbourne on Anzac Day - play up the rivalry of those cities.
Or how about Port and Freo...Battle for the Wharfs.

Maybe the other clubs should be creative and come up with a concept....
