Crows v Swans

Talk on the national game

Postby sydney-dog » Sun Apr 22, 2007 9:55 am

Dutchy

For some reason the Swans big guns never bring their A Grade game to footy park, Hall, Goddes, Micky O and Kirk (except for 4th term) all had disappointing games

But in saying that we need to give some credit to the crows, Rutten absolutely smashed Hall in the one on one contest, Bassett was fantastic on Hall and the Crows midfield beat Sydney at their own game, the Crows were fantastic at the clearance, especially in the first half and they just denyed Goodes and Kirk the footy

This game was never going to be high scoring, Sydney play a brand of footy which enables them to always be in the contest and makes it almost impossible for the opposition to blow the game apart

Special mentions to

Mcleod, I got 71 / 1 on Macca when Brownlow betting opened, another fantastic game last night and would of polled high in the past 3 games

Griffen, some of his work at the centre bounces was fantastic and very pleased with his work rate around the ground

Proplyzia, this guy is an AFL footballer and should be in our best 22 every week, he is so clean with his hands, exceptional with his decision making, foot skills anre fantastic, I don't think I have seen him miss a set shot for goal. Most importantly, it looks like he has picked up a yard of pace, his chase down on Goddes was team lifting

Van Berlo, special mention, his front on tackle on Goddes, you just love seeing players showing this sort of courage

Another tough week this week, Freo at Subi, but I am confident the crows are top 4 bound

One thing it was interesting sitting in the outer tonight, when the crows kicked a goal it was like someone had mad a par at the US masters, just a gentle clap...no excitement and atmosphere..

Different impression on the TV actually re the crowd noise. I noticed the same in the Power game too, a lot of crowd noise for what looked like a small crowd. Maybe they amp up the effects mike.

I just checked the stats and it all looked line ball to me with the only glaring difference being the kicking for goal. Swans kicked 5.14 but there was 5 rushed behinds. Anyway, tell me about Sydney's dominance in the stats? It didn't look to me like Sydney were in that game at all except for the 3rd quarter.

I also have to ask. Everyone knew beforehand what type of game it was going to be, why did you go when the Kangas were on? To beat Sydney you have to play a certain type of game that isn't the most attractive but gets the job done.

Well said, true South Australians would have been hoping Collingwood won today.

I agree, as much as I hate Eddie McG, I tipped Collingwood, why did I tip Collingwood, cause I hate Port and that Kid's dad in that ad played for Collingwood.

what Im trying to say is the game was played on Sydney's terms, it was the type of game that they love to play, they had more I50's and more scoring shots, just didnt put scoreboard pressure ont he Crows, if they did I feel it would have been different...from what I saw live, Sydney have plenty of improvement in them

I thought I would see a ripper game of footy, being a footy park member I go to the games I think will be good but usually if its clashes with a Roos game I stay home....I sat in the outer last night for a different perspective as a there was a spare seat with some mates...I was suprised how reserved they were

I actually enjoyed watching last night's game.
Very intense football with some brilliant tackling. Hard, tough.
Maybe there wasn't as much run in it, but that's been the problem in AFL in recent years - too much run and too few contests, unlike last night.
I've watched the last two Crows games, one live, one on tv, and I'm grudgingly admiring them.
I wish I could rely on Collingwood being so consistent when everything's against them.

But onto another theme of this thread....Crows supporters.

After watching last night and seeing a virtually full stadium, a week after the embarassment of all those empty seats the week before against their biggest rivals, I think I've worked out a major reason for them not going to the Showdown.
They don't like to be in a Footy Park in which there'll be a chance of an even/or majority of supporters cheering against them.
It's a situation which arises from being THE Pride of South Australia.

Sure they'll go to Melbourne and watch games there and be outnumbered, but that's to be expected, that's an adventure. But not at Footy Park, no way.

Have a look at the other thread where that issue was done to death.

There's a 5 page thread down the page called something like "Ticket sales slow for Showdown"

I reckon we came up with about 8,413 theories as to why the crowd was down and managed to get some solid Crows v Power sledging going on too

I've voiced my concerns/opinions on what I perceive as Craigy's shortfalls in the coaching department, as some posters on here will recall ... I've also got to say, that you have to give the man plenty of credit ... It just astounds me that Adelaide keep winning, I mean I honestly don't believe that in terms of individual ability, they rank in the top 6 (probably even lower with the injury list they currently have), yet Craigy continually gets the best out of the TEAM, the bugger is killing my tips!! :D

very interesting to note Bill Sanders come out in the media and state "Neil Craig has no resposibility to promote the game his only job is to get Wins for the Adelaide Football Club"

Its that attitude that is killing the game...Craig will get wins at any cost, even making the game spectacle

Every coach has the same attitude, and rightly so, their teams W/L performance ultimately dictates his employment ... The Crows are certainly not alone in "Winning Ugly".

It's a shame it has to be that way, but unless you're blessed with the personnel of the West Coast last year, or Brisbane at their height what can you do?

Of course his responsibility is to only get wins, FFS Dutchy! Coaches develop playing styles to suit the players on the list to give that list the best opportunity to win games. They aren't marketing people there to devise aesthetically pleasing playing styles to please non-Crows supporters. I haven't spoken to one Crows supporter who didn't think enjoy Sat night's game.

It seems to me that Craigy always has to jump a higher hurdle than other coaches to please people. CP, great to hear you coming around :D

Neil Craig has no obligation to play any particular style of football. If it means an ugly brand of football, so be it.

The club, however, has an obligation to promote the game. Craig should be a part of that. When they promote big matches in Melbourne, both coaches are involved - witness Sheedy/Pagan the other week or the Anzac Day game - regardless of whose home game it is. A 30 minute press conference and the odd door stop can't be too onerous. It is a dangerous thing to take oneself too seriously because when the chips are down, people will remember the meagre scraps given during better times.
