No, 8 games at any level ( so no VFL ) no AFL for 14 weeks!

Correction. 8 weeks with no football at any level, 6 weeks suspended. Just in case he does it again. ;)
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

6 Held over. Doesn't that mean like a suspended sentence?

Good call by the AFL, no sport can let people get away with betting on their competition especially games they are involved in.

Just look at the reputation of Cricket and Tour De France etc etc when it comes to betting and drug cheats.

Has to be stamped out no matter how small the value of the bet its more the intent.

14 matches and $20k for Shaw with no games at any level for 8 weeks and $10k fine for Maxwell, who informed family of his move forward and on that information they placed bets.

It does seem a bit harsh on Maxwell that it could have been an innocent remark by him to his family, and if you were them, of course you would go and have a small bet as a bit of fun.
However, Shaw, love watching him play, but what a f***ing idiot.

The funny thing here is the misjudgement on Shaw's behalf, actually thinking Maxwell had the ability to create and score a goal
or maybe not a misjudgement at all, hence only a $10 input

UPDATE 4pm: HEATH Shaw will not play footy for at least eight weeks after betting on a Collingwood game.
The AFL has confirmed a 14-week ban, with six weeks suspended, along with a fine of $20,000 for breaches of AFL's gambling regulations.

Shaw will be ineligible to play at any level for the next eight matches.

The breach relates to Shaw betting $10 (in a shared $20 bet with a friend) on Nick Maxwell kicking the first goal in the Round 9 match against Adelaide.

Maxwell, known as a defender, started the game in the forward line, but failed to kick a goal.

Three bets were placed on Maxwell to score first goal by members of his family, with stakes totalling $85.

His price for first goal plunged from 100-1 to 25-1.

AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson told a press conference this afternoon Maxwell had no knowledge or intent that information about his starting position would be used for betting purposes.

However, he has been fined $10,000, $5000 of which has been suspended.

Anderson said Shaw had been "open and honest" about the breaches when questioned.

Collingwood responded "quickly and appropriately" and "quickly recognised the seriousness of this matter", according to Anderson.

The club has scheduled a press conference for 4.45pm.

Anderson said he believed in the circumstances that the penalties were appropriate.

"We have very clear rules about the use of inside information in football," he said.

"If you breach the regulations, you will get caught."

The league has introduced stringent rules in recent years prohibiting players, club and league officials from punting on matches.

The match was brought to the league's attention in May after a corporate bookmaker was approached to take bets on the Collingwood skipper kicking the first goal at Etihad Stadium, although there was no suggestion Shaw was involved at the time
