Yet it was a better than the embarrassing effort that my team put in, in GF#1 in 2007

Fair point mate .. A replay is a Grand Final game like any other, the result can still be close or a blow out.

At the end of the day when the season starts, everyone is aware of the potential for a replay and noone has any advantage or disadvantage.

x2

It probably seemed sensible when everyone lived a horse ride from the ground and nobody pre-bought tickets, but it's an anachronism.

It may not happen again in our lifetimes (and I bet the AFL are banking on this) but if it does happen and one (or both) of the teams is non-Victorian, they'll scrap it then.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I'm happy to stick with the replay, as Grand Final draws are uncommon.
Once you start considering extra time you are on a slippery slope that leads to extra extra time, penalty shoot outs, or ultimately tossing a coin.
It would gradually turn a good spectator sport into a meaningless joke.

If the first GF is a draw both teams still have the chance to work at winning the replay, and in the end the best team wins.

AFL seems to have made a decision supported by the majority.

I'm going to take a lie down until this passes.

Son - Wow the game is a draw Dad, who wins the game?
Father - No one wins son its a draw and each team gets 2 points
Son - Uhh I thought we play this game to get a result? so how does that work in the finals when we need a winner? Do they both win?
Father - No they play extra time as they need a winner
Son - Uhhh so that would be exciting if its a Grand Final
Father - No wrong again son its considered a draw again
Son - So they share the premiership, cool 2 winners!
Father - No wrong again son they replay the game the week after to get a winner
Son - Uhhhhh so what if its a Draw again the following week?
Father - They play Extra Time
Son - Thats confusing Dad, for 4 different scenarios throughout the season we have 3 different ways of determining a result.
Father - Yes son
Son - Seems a weird way of doing things

Not really, seems easy enough for me.

Minor Round - Draw - Share the points.
Finals - Draw - Extra time.
Grand Finals - Draw - Replay.

Whats so tough? If a kid asked that many questions he'd be able to understand the 3 line table listed above.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

Then people who didn't get the opportunity to get a seat the week before now suddenly find themselves with another chance - Those that were there the week before that cant go again, saw arguably one of the most famous Grand Finals in history.

Also, a draw in the minor round is still a result.

I really don't understand all the hysteria surrounding drawn games, particularly the grand final.

2 drawn Grand Finals in how many years ? ( '77 and '10 ) and you want to make a plan for what will happen if there is two in two weeks?

A replay. I dont make the rules but I would have thought they aren't that tough to understand and do we really need to spend this much time debating a once in 50 year event?

At least a Grand Final replay is more 'for the people' than the suits.

I'm not a great one for extra time. i can understand why it is needed in the earlier finals, but not in minor round games, and think our game is actually better for keeping the minor round draws compared to other sports.
On an earlier thread it was discussed whether the minor premier actually got much of advantage given the way the prelim final matchups could work out.
So, a bit like the Sheffield Shield final, how about the lower ranking Grand Finalist having to BEAT the higher winning Grand Finalist, meaning Collingwood would have claimed the premiership the first week.
Just an idea, and don't expect many to agree with it, but I'd rather this than extra time.
