I think we're better than that old sentiment of "testing" injuries. The game is tough enough with the extra speed, size and ability of blokes to hurt players legally these days. Surely if it bothers a player they're already at a disadvantage so why not just be better than them?

I think the net result can be put into the "football was the winner" category.

I have to admit, I can't stand Baker, although I do have some level of admiration for him playing regular AFL football when he has buggerall footy talent (by comparison at that level).

He was always going to cop games from the other night, but 9?!?! That's just plain crazy I reckon.

surely the punishment has to fit the crime 9 or 12 weeks is bullshit for baker 3 weeks for jonno is over the top and 3 weeks for mooney for a love tap is crap when judd gets nothing!! out of all that jonno and judd are the only ones that caused damage

when watching the contest between baker and johnson, i was finally entertained by something that was happening in the AFL, thought it was great, i thought the line was only crossed when johnson throw the elbow smashing bakers eye to smitherines, they were giving it to each other all night few love taps letting each other no they were still there and wernt going to back down, dont no how on earth they came up with baker getting tripple the amount of games johnson gets, just think if steve baker did that to a gary ablett or judd, and left the same amount of damage to one of there faces he would have to 30 games

Baker - A little stiff on the penalties IMO. Perhaps 4 or 5 would have been suitable. The week for hitting Johnsons hand is a joke.

Johnson - 3 weeks on the money for mine. Sure, Baker was giving him crap all night but retaliation is no defence. ;)

Mooney - Repeat offender and an idiot and it was more than a love tap, he punched Blake, full stop. 2 weeks was on the money again.

The point was made on Footy Classified last night that players have been getting away with targeting injuries all year and in previous years, yet the tribunal has suddenly handed down a penalty for it.

Zero consistency. At least give the players some prior warning that it is a reportable offence.

i love a bit of biff and passion throughout the game. but baker does this week in week out. if he does challenge and gets 12 it is a bit hard but that shows how inconsistent the afl is behind the scenes.
what i want to know is why the umpires (including emergencies) did not try to take control of the situation? i dont think it would have got as out of hand as it did if there was some authority shown by all officials.
they are quick to get on the whistle when they aren't required to be, so why can't they when they should?

Baker's probably got away with a whole lot more over the years that wasn't caught on camera, getting what he deserves.

If you can’t beat and injured player legitimately then you are a chump and should give the game away. Play the game on its merit, if you’re not good enough so be it!

Mate, I've played with broken bones before and if someone targeted them to put me off my game then kudos to them for trying to get a mental edge. No point whinging about it once you've crossed that white line.

And he still racked up 30 possessions. Best in the League.

Agreed you are fair game and if you sta on the field you must still be able to compete at a high level, but my view is the player should worry less about hitting his hand and stop him from kicking goals from the goals square as SJ did..... No need for it, play the ball!

Hard to differentiate between Baker hitting Johnson's hand and another incident previously this year, I think it was J Riewoldt hitting Tayte Pears hand? Apparently there is 4 games difference in suspension between the pair.

The difference is in the prior history of the player, not the offence. This kicks in for every offence which is why Baker got so many weeks.

Prior history only matters when taking an early plea or not as to whether the offence can be reduced. As Baker has a poor record with the tribunal he has loading of 50% regardless of whether he takes an early plea or not, and can then reduce the total by 25% if he takes an early plea. He only received 1 game I just realised for his misconduct charge but how does he get 100+ points for this offence when Jack gets 0?
