Trade Bait

Talk on the national game

If they trade JUDD for the reasons specified it would
be an indictment on the game.
Trading the best player in the comp. would ridicule our great code.

Well with talk of limited free agency coming into the game in the next round of AFL and AFLPA negotiations and the fact that AFL level Footy is a $20 Million + business why wouldn't you give up something that is going to be valuable for another 5 years for something that is going to be potentially valuable for 10 years???

Sentiment went out of Footy when Barassi went to Carlton.....
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

TASSIE

The window of opportunity now exists at the Weagles set up
to convert this group of exquisite personel into a premiership
or 2 or 3 and the focus should be to achieve this.
Use JUDD for 2-3 years for the conversion and worry about
the infrastructure of the club at a later time frame.

If JUDD was playing for a mediocre club the TASSIE and SYD-DOG
trade bait would be a worthy thought.

This situation is better in perspective with the KA and say a WELLS.

Tassie, I can sort of see your point, however no one is going to take over 30's players no matter how good (alright Carey was taken but we got Wells!!!) they would be more likely to take a Hentschell than anyone over 30

As a Kangaroo fan we are potentially going to have some draft picks!!! after only finishing below 10th once in the last 14 years we are not going to give them up.

What I like is the emotional attachment Gibbsy has to the Kangas - he supports them!

As for Wells mal, hes marrying a Melb chick later this year so he is staying put in Melbourne which is great news.

Tassie - I agree with your strategy and raised this on 5AA a few weeks ago now and was howled down by the panel when I mentioned Burton's name.

I think there may be a chance to deal with Freo - they have a history of "unbeatable" offers at trade time (like McLeod for Chris Groom); Connolly has had 5 years there and cant afford to say he is rebuilding and embarking on a 5 year plan again....and one or two fresh and seasoned key players who are used to the travel grind may mean that their team finishes 5th or 6th for a change instead of 8th or 10th.

If this next draft is a superdraft, then picks 30-40 will be like picks 12-20 in other years. Trades don't have to be one-for-one so you could always toss in a Jericho or Porplyzia as icing on the cake for a Burton type.

Also think Adelaide MUST get a key ruckman this year as succession for Clarke and Biglands. Meesen is not going guns at Norwood, Maric has had limited chances.

Another thought - Would Burton, Jericho and Porplyzia for Pavlich and a draft pick of say no 45 be an acceptable trade for Freo and Adelaide?

I dont think anyone would realistically be interested in Jericho.

To get Pavlich, i reckon the Crows would need to offload a few players such as Mattner, Burton AND Johncock, but even then i dont think Freo would take up the trade. And Neil Craig has said a few times he hates the trading period/concept, theres no way he'll endorse getting rid of 3 of his players even if it was to lead to Pavlich going to the Crows.

As i said on another thread i think the more realistic players to focus on at the WA clubs are Schammer, Waters and Butler. Will be particularly interesting to see if Freo's view of Schammer has changed after his poor form this year.

Someone like Meesen i reckon would be ideal bait. Probably the most obvious club who'd want him would be Carlton, but who have they got? They wouldn't let go of Murphy or Walker, so realistically, the best the Crows could get for him would probably be Carlton's second round (but probably more realistically third round) pick.

Maybe this year will be the year the Roos will sound out possible trades for Wells. They could possibly get 3 top 15 picks for him. IF the Eagles were prepared to consider listening to offers for Judd, then maybe Wells could be involved there, given that one is a Victorian playing at a WA club and vice versa. I believe Wells' partner is a Victorian though so that could complicate things. Maybe instead of going back to WA though he could finish up at another Melbourne Club? But given the Kangaroos are battling financially they'd probably need to hang onto Wells given that he is a marquee (spelling) player, and those few supporters they do have would probably tear up their memberships if he left the club!!

What will interest me quite a lot as far as the 2 SA clubs is concerned at this trading period, will be what they're prepared to give up for some of the well performed SA bred young players at other clubs. Apart from those at the WA based clubs already discussed theres quite a few others - Jordan Russell (Carlton), Andrew Mackie (Geelong), Jordan McMahon (WB), Jay Schulz (Richmond) etc. Then theres those players a few years older and a bit more advanced in their deveopment, such as Jarrod Rivers, Aaron Davey, and Corney Enright. I cant see the Demons getting rid of Davey, and probably not Rivers, but i'm sure they'd at least listen to offers re Rivers.

How to trade with Fremantle...
Adelaide Crows: We'd like Matthew Pavlich
Freo Shockers: ok, that sounds fair.
AC: Hang on, don't you want a player from us?
FS: I s'pose your right! Who wil you give us?
(AC whisper amongst themselves that Andrew Mcleod only has 1 year left in him)
AC: We'll let you have Andrew McLeod
FS: Excellent! *champagne pops* We missed him 1st time round, & we're not gonna make that mistake again!
Fremantles Recruiting Team drunkenly dances off into the night to celebrate their "success"...

AC - Don't you want something in return?
FS - oh yeah. Not sure what you think about this but we're pretty keen on Trevor Jacques coming across plus your last draft pick. How about it?
AC - hmm. We'll need to get approval from the highest order for this one. Grand Master Sanders. We like the idea though so can we put a deposit on Pavlich to give us the first right of refusal until the end of the trade period?
FS - Deposit? No worries. How about a Burley signed by Andrew McLeod?
AC - seems reasonable. We'll catch up soon.

Later.....

AC - we have spoken to Grand Master Sanders and he has agreed to your request to trade Pavlich for Jacques plus draft pick number 94, on one condition.
FS - OK, what would that be?
AC - the return of our deposit.
FS - hmmmmm. Alright then.

Clubs shake hands and leave room.

FS prepare press release for the West newspaper. "Freo seals trade of the decade."
AC prepare press release for the Advertiser (Confidential). "Jacques retirement party at Marble Bar brings tributes from near and far".
AC prepare press release for The Advertiser.
