Mal - you are so spot on

* Limit the changes (over 100 per side in a game is an absolute farce)
* Get the resting rucks in the forward line again and make their contributions more worthwhile
* Make it a game of attrition, with the emphasis on 'who is the fittest team' and not 'who has the fittest interchange bench'
* 18 on the field, no more than 4 on the bench (I prefer 2 or 3)
* No more than 24 changes for a game (6 per quarter is fair enough - one every five mionutes), with stretcher cases and
blood rules not counting as a change

knowing how coaches like to exploit the rules we would then see the stretcher out or blokes giving themselves blood noses every few minutes!!!
I am not talking to you for 3 minutes because you punched me in the head and it hurt and that was not okay for you to do

It's interesting that this seems to be the first issue like this where the average football supporter is blaming the coaches and calling for the AFL to make rule changes. Usually it's the opposite.
