Sure actions speak volumes on the field, but the most kicks doesn't equate to things like one per centers!

In this case, with Juddy being the No.1 contested possession footballer in the League, IMO he is the perfect captain.

I dont think this is the case at all.

Geelong: Ling - clearly not their best player
Ess: Watson - not sure who is better, maybe best of a bad bunch
Syd: Kirk - not better than Goodes
Bulldogs: Johnson - good but not better than Cooney, Griffin, etc.
Port: Cassisi - not their best but is consistent
etc.

agree completely I think it is quite rare that the teams best player is the captain

Yes mostly true.
I was thinking more in mind of local clubs!
I think Cassi is their best.
Johnson is consistently their best.
Watson easily best!
Kirk, Ling, Maxwell i eat my words!
And Goodwin just got handed the reigns as most experienced.
What do you think is most important traits of a captain?

1. Winning the toss
2. The last address in pre-game huddle
3. Ability to change course of game in adversity

IMO :D

I think the most important traits of a captain is leadership off and on the field.

He wasn't captain at WC when the trouble started, he took over as captain because the previous incumbent was all over the place. I don't think we need to re-hash his demise.

Lets look at the previous two Carlton Captains
Kouta - I have no idea what he was like so feel free
Lance (the red headed bloke) - There's a paragon of virtue if ever there was one.

Some of you have got short memories.

GG, I'm interested in your motivation for this topic. You've had a few goes at posting in this topic and I'd be interested to find out what you thought of Simon Goodwin as your captain?

I am not against Carlton .. used to follow them a bit when they had a few bay players and still do a bit. Dont have a problem with Goodie being Crows captain. I just think that these days there is much more scrutiny on players off field actions and captains these days need to media friendly for corporate sponsors etc etc. These days top level footy is no longer a sport but a business .... unfortunately.

Lance Whitnall was his name. He was only Captain for one year, then he got delisted because of on going knee problems.Battled weight and personal problems from time to time. Not bad, but certainly no superstar.

Anthony Koutafides was Captain for 3 years, he was a very good player. Athletic but probably never really shone like he could have because of injury. Knee got the better of him too.

Thats just a recap for those who have short memories.

Oh yeah, forgot about that.

They had a really good year in 1995, proved to be a bit of an achilles heel as it turns out but they're bouncing right back. For those with short memories. ;)

All clubs go through some lean years, you'd know that being a Geelong supporter. Wasn't it 40 years between flags until this decade when you should have won all 3 you were in. They should prob win again this year too
