My original post was in recognising the Power showed something today they haven't for quite some time and at this stage it is paying dividends. A proper response by REB saying what he is now alleging he meant - would have meant this thread go on in the way it was intended..where people could have commented constructively on what they saw and didn't see today.

Fair enough - happy to concede that one given that I concluded it was going to get to that stage eventually.....

Regarding the Power today, I agree, they might've shown something! All everyone has said (REB included) is don't get carried away. WCE who are in the same boat as you - ie, needing to improve this year - will give you a very good idea of where you are. Given that WCE aren't really going to threaten for the top 4 or 6 I wouldn't think. They might be around the 8 but would need things to go their way. My prediction is that they'll finish bottom 8, so you can work out what Port's potential position is from the game next week.

Seriously I'm not trying to troll you Port supporters at all. I've been there, with false hope after the Blues have gone all the way. All I'm trying to say is treat the pre season with trepidation!

Guernseys?, Laidley?, Hocking?, Jan & Jenny? - don't know what it was, maybe even the Magpie thing, BUT, it was the type of footy us Port supporters expect..

I know it's only early, but if they continue with that endeavour and willingness to take a risk - 2010 won't be the ordinary year a lot of pundits are forecasting.

Only a trial game obviously, but I must admit Ive been looking forward to see if Laidley can have an impact down at Alberton as I rate him quite highly.

Ditto, had impartial non-dealings with him in Canberra when he was with Western Creek and have nothing bad to say about the bloke.

Im actually quite a big wrap for him mate, probably moreso even than for his peers at Alberton (no disrespect intended)

A mate of mine, a North supporter had nothing good to say about him but that was more about his ability of attracting sponsors. IMO he was dealing with inferior lists and equipment and deserves a heap of credit. Time will tell with Brad Scott, but they've already upgraded their off field side, so it's difficult to compare.

X Runna, I think what REB was eluding to is similar to my thoughts of this ridiculous comp. Let me explain - Carlton won two pre season comps and finished almost last in both years. Take NOTHING from pre season. Most coaches don't care about the comp, therefore winning easily against a team pitting themselves for a tilt at a top four position means that you could be (more than likely will be) dealt false hope.

Just happy to get through NAB Cup games without injuries.
The biggest positive about winning is that you play on better quality ovals/facilities for longer (no trips to the Alice like the Crows now face)

I think for me, the bits I heard of Laidley (at the Roos) I thought his plans sounded alright, but every now and then you hear someone speak who is unflinching in their direction despite all the incoming against and I reckon thats perhaps where I admired him most ... He'll stand up for what he believes in (and not just token stand up)

Agree. Unfortunately for him, he was at a club that needed a bloke who walked and talked like Eddie McGuire, and spruiking how good it is to be part of their club. He wasn't quite what they needed at that time despite being a good coach.

I reckon the Roo's have a bloke who bases his model on Eddie, but I don't reckon even Eddie would have been successful if they didn't have the masses they do and it doesn't necessarily work as well for James given the size of his supporter base.

Really? I reckon Scott is worse than Laidley for bringing people into the club. His communication skills are similar to Laidley, so I don't see what they're gaining there. North need a salesman and coach. They might have a coach, but they don't have a salesman.

Hang on, I was comparing CEO's not coaches .. I dont think it was Laidleys job to dredge the Yarra for those hidden Roo's supporters ;)

I agree CP. It seems he is modelling the Roos on Collingwood. Lots of shiny suits everywhere. As evidence, by the club's own admission Scott is a more media friendly (fan friendly) face than Laidley.

Great post Runna!
I agree - great signs from the Power early on. Ignore the bashing you've copped from some of the above (and forget REB - he's a clown of the highest order - I just ignore every piece of crap he posts here now).

If Port can play good hard attacking footy, it's a huge step in the right direction compared to what we were dished up last year.

Carn the power!!!

Could I suggest you put future topics like this in the dedicated Power forum as you would receive more "positive" feedback in there and that's what it's there for.

Might want to re-think that. REB is one of the most astute posters on here and his "Calendar" reference was purely to remind us/you that it is indeed February and to not get ahead of our/yourself.

If you want to read Port bashing, search Wedgie's posts. ;)
