Feel sorry for Dean, tactically one of the best in the business - Just doesn't have the cattle to play week in week out against the league heavyweights. He certainly instilled an element of accountability, sense of belief and competitiveness among his troops that got them into the finals more often than not with Dean at the helm.

Would love to see him get another job, but he is North Melbourne through and through and would be surprised if he coached at AFL level again.

He's had 7 years to get the cattle, obviously not a good recruiter or doesn't possess the interpersonal skills to get his troops to deliver the goods. He always seems to be an angry man, I think them days are over.

Is Longmire still at the Swans?

If so, and if the Kangas are keen on him, the Swans might have to suddenly make some decisions about and with Paul Roos. I thought Roos had been cultivating Longmire for some time as 'coach in waiting' and taking more of a back seat role himself?

We dont like appointing good looking blokes!

I noticed with interest on Sunday that Arocca and Brayshaw had the Bino's on the team at 3/4 time, obviously looking at how the coaches were dealing with the team

Id put Longmire as a clear favourite and the contract needs to be 3 years minimum

Not disappointed with todays events...

Seemed to coach in the same manner that he played...honest and tough, maybe the days of that type of coach in the AFL are gone or maybe as others have said just didnt have the cattle.
Trust the process.

Why do people keep saying this about coaches? He was in his 7th season as coach. If they had a poor list, it's HIS fault. In Laidley's time as coach, the Roos really bought some lemons, so Laidley only has himself to blame for a poor list.

Not anymore AH

Maybe 20 years ago the coach handled all the recruiting. These days they have an entire recruiting dept with networks all over the country and the senior coach either rubber stamps, picks one out of a recommended shortlist or just takes the players he's given.

Increasingy the coach does what he is best at only - coach. There's now a specialist manager of the footy dept and a recruiting manager. It's a real team effort these days which is why I cringe when supporters heap all the blame for everything (including the holocaust) on 1 guy.

In fact, I think it's because of poor recruiting decisions by coaches in the past that clubs to realised the function needs a specialist team outside the coaches. Apparently the decisions to draft Angwin and Watts to the Crows were Ayres'. As was giving up draft pick 12 to Port to get Matthew Bode. Port got Shaun Burgoyne.

On topic - I feel for Laidley as I always thought he was a reasonable coach with an average-OK list which he seemed to get the best out of. I think the retirements over the last 2 years since 2007 have had more of an impact than anyone thought. Plus the injuries this year have been horrendous. Good on him for leaving with dignity.

Isn't that what AH said ? :? So if the coach rubber stamps or picks out one then isn't he to blame for choosing the wrong one ?

Not in my opinion. If he did ALL the leg work, worked a list of 100 down to 10 he wanted, did all the trade negotiations and picked them himself then yes. If he's to be blamed then you have to blame the recruiting dept equally. If he has a short list presented to him then he has to trust their judgements because he hasn't done all the leg work they have. How's he to know the list of 5 he's given are the best out of the 100? That's what his recruiting manager is paid big bucks for.

At the Crows it sounds like it's Rendell's final call TBH, based on articles I have read. I was just trying to help AH a little bit as each club would do it slightly differently.

At other clubs it sounds like the football manager makes the final call on recruiting.

I am trying to say it isn't 100% the fault of the coach. Some % less than 100 depending on how their football department is structured.
