Its true that Western Sydney is openly hostile towars australian rules, but we should be looking at the nect generation, not the current one.
Would Kieran Jack be playing aussie rules if South Melbourne had not gone north?

In the next 5 - 15 years Tassie is clearly the best option. After that at least one if not more sides in Melbourne will be forced to either fold or relocate. There is the opportunity for a West Sydney side. At the end of the day Melbourne cannot support ten sides.

It never could - except by stealing players from all over the country - but I guess it could finance them then because nobody was paid so much.

Tassie Blues, I was in your loverly town over the June long weekend, what was all the kerfuffle about Darren Creswells shock departure under a cloud of rumour and innuendo?

*edit* : give me a Tassie team any day.. just gives me another excuse to go to Tassie!

He announced he was quitting the club on a Wednesday (I think) after another loss and didn't give any reasons as to why he was leaving. He then flew to the UK the next day for family reason. There were a few rumours going around that he owed some players money or had gambling debt but I think they were just rumours and nothing ever came of it. Big tip to get the job next year is Port Adelaide assistant Jason Cripps

The next team should definately be in Tasmania over West Sydney.. Your comment about the AFL wanting there game to be the number one sport on the mainland is garbage.. Ofcourse they do but are you saying Tasmania isnt part of Australia? If the AFL wants to grow why populate states already holding AFL licences when they can spread to uncharted territory in Tassie.

Im not sure if you've ever been to Western Sydney but its little Lebanon and I cant see them turning there back on there footy(NRL) for a garbage AFL side. I think the AFL board has to get over there eagerness to beat the NRL at everything. NRL will always be QLD and NSW favourite footy code. AFL will never stake that claim. Another team in Sydney over Tassie will be the worst thing they can do.

Last time I heard the league was AFL, Australian Football League not AMLFL, Australian Main Land Football League

Except Telstra/Foxtel will pay big dollars for another Sydney team but not for a Tassie one. It doesn't matter whether their business/economic judgement is right or wrong.
I agree Tassie should get it on moral grounds, but this is business we are talking about!

We know that the AFL likes to crush other Leagues in the same code, so there's no doubt that the NRL is there to be crushed. Of course Tasmania should be in there - the VFL raped Tassie even more than WA and SA.

I think Tasmania would be an easy choice as the next side. Don't agree with arguments stating the success of their junior or VFL team or that they wouldn't be ready by 2018. With the draft the way it is, you have a talent pool equal with every other club and they'd get plenty of support from throughout the state, similar I imagine to the Crows, but on a smaller scale. They would sell out their stadium.

I think Tassie should be the next side in, but agree with Psyber and others, that the AFL want the tv $ and they'll get that by having a game in two of the biggest states every week - QLD & NSW. Interesting times ahead. I just hope the extra teams don't have a negative effect on the SANFL.

Maybe we should have a new club called the Foxtel/Telstra Fox's...

More likely 3 new teams with exemptions from the salary cap - one each for Telstra, Foxtel, and BigPond.
Seriously, No, they don't want to have their name on a team. They want to own the league.

Agree 100%. I've lived over there, they are passionate for NRL. The AFL at best will chip away small chunks of support.

Foxtel/Telstra dont give a damn where the next AFL team is from, as long as they get a 5 year return on any investment.
The posts on here about one team being a 15 year prospect and another being a 25 year prospect is irrelevant - has no bearing on who will be the next team. There is no way any sane big business will invest large sums of money to run a risky venture that long for a return.
AFL footy is just a fraction of Telstra/Foxtel interests, they will abandon ship just as quick as they jumped on, say for example soccer gets a foot-hold and AFL revenues start to dry up. The AFL at least has done the right thing financially by realising the big $$$ currently on offer while the AFL product is hot.

In my opinion Tassie should be the next team, followed by NT, but that is sheer fantasy.....

How about we get both. Fremantle can sell their license to one of them. Let's face it they've done FA with it in 13 seasons, and things aren't getting better anytime soon.

Bringing "nationalism" into the AFL will not even remotley work, what happens to the current players in the AFL, making them switch sides shows a massive amount of contempt for the jumpers that they currently play for.

Added to that the Gaelic Association have had constant issues with the physical nature of the games, playing in the AFL is either going to worsen that or more likely use it as an excuse to continue down the current pathway of softening up the physical contact in the game to appease a group of investors. That is the absolute last thing that we want Demetriou to leave as a legacy!
