Talk on the national game

Psyber wrote:I always though Modra was not big enough for FF and got by on his leap, which the opposition didn't expect until they had seen a bit of him. Then he became less successful. His success depended on delivery to his advantage, which required a good midfield. That's possibly, also, why Scott Hodges worked in front of a strong Port in the SANFL, but was not so successful in the AFL.

The Crows have tried the same approach with Welsh and now Burton. The odds of it working are not good.

I like direct play and a big man who can contest at CHF and FF, so that if they don't get the mark the ball at least comes to the ground, even if the midfield aren't on top and it is a hurried kick forward.

All f/fwds rely on delivery to advantage, I'd rather have a f/fwd that can jump, lead quick ( to space ) & show 2nd & 3rd efforts, something a big man lacks.
Your very harsh on Modra arn't you, the best f/fwd they've had with 500+ goals.
Big men with the above attributes are very hard to find & the game now has changed soooo much Psyber, if you havn't noticed.
Do you see Freemantle sitting Sandilands (who's the biggest bloke in the AFL) at CHF or F/FWD?
Try criticising those that havn't made it.

Modra was a gun. I wish there were more players like him in the league today.

I had the same attitude to Modra that Malcolm Blight had - what second and third efforts?
The Crows tried the same thing with Welsh, and now are with Burton, with the same unreliability. Both of them may be OK at HFF or a pocket.
Give me a Plugger, or a Barry Hall, but one who can keep his temper!

Modra was and did kick a ton, Welsh and Burton would never be any good for more than 65-70 IMHO and thats with an efficient midfield pushing the ball down their throats

I agree that early in his career he was much more effective than the others. The problem was that once he had been worked out, or wear and tear reduced his pace and leap, there was not another option to his style [or the Crows at the time].

So why was he still playing if he was medically unfit to perform at the required level?

[Actually, that was probably the Crow's administration's fault more than his, if that was the case - they have a pattern of keeping on selecting the "stars" for at least one season after they are past it - McDermott and McGuinness, and even Hart and Ricciuto, went at least one season too long.]

That certain coach also told A.Jarman,T.McGuiness and C.McDermott to get knotted and then won 2 flags. Can't argue with that....... I know he was not fit but the crows played alot better in the 97 prelim without him at FF. harsh I know but history does speak for itself....

From the perspective that they won 2 flags i guess Blight made the right decision, but Mods was about 3 years younger than those other players, and from what i've heard it was off field reasons Blight decided to move him on.

It was totally off-field problems that led to Modra leaving the Crows. I won't say what the reasons were because it involved another Crows player who was retained by the club and played in the 2 premierships. :)

THAT wasn't his problem. His problem was that he LOVED it too much.

I haven't read about the Plugger issue you refer to here in Victoria, but perhaps I should have added "and behave like a responsible adult".
I was talking about build type not specific individuals.

You can just apply for a temporary permit. Country players who train in the city do it all the time when their team has a bye. We did it in 2000 and we were bottom and played the top side and we kicked them off the park by 10 goals
