I find it odd that Libba sought out an extension of his contract at years' end. He didn't get it, but if he was so against seeking a reappointment at the club that "he knew" tanked, then why seek reappointment? Wouldn't you just walk away if it was so much against your inner spirit?

I'm not surprised that a bloke who did not get reappointed has squealed.

There's a big difference between 'tanking' and simply prioritising season 2008 over 2007.

Implying that the coach and players deliberately went out to lose is a big call by Libba. I'd believe more that the club's administration decided to not risk 2008 season by desperately trying to win every game in 2007 at all costs. If that meant letting a game go so that the extra draft pick was secured (giving possibly 10 years of benefit to the club), then I think most supporters would be happy with it TBH. Don't deliberately lose but don't do everything you could to win.

Libba has a history of speaking out of school, 5AA reported that the Bulldogs have black-listed him after he went public about allegations (his) that the club was cutting costs from their football department. Again he went public after not be re-appointed in his position at the club.

My view is that if he truly believes he has evidence to back up his claims why not go direct to the AFL and lodge a formal complaint rather than go to the media about it?

I think the priority pick needs to go so that this innuendo never again raises its ugly head.

I don't think anyone can blame Carlton for tanking or throwing games, which in the end is what they've done. When there's such a huge carrot dangled by the AFL draft rules. Which is the underlying problem, which is also why nothing will be done concerning Carlton as compared to the situation with Sydney and Paul Roos. Don't forget Carlton got themselves to the bottom of the ladder by rorting the salary cap and were penalised for it through fines and draft picks (thanks to their Pres., somethings never change), so in my eyes they're still rorting the system only this time the AFL can't do anything about it as it's within their rules, but not the spirt of the game! Which seems, daily to be overlooked by the AFL 'heads" in pursuit of $$$$$$$$$$.
As for Libba and Hutchinson.... well at least Libba will probably fade away but everyone will have to endure Hutchinson for some time to come.

I like finns idea of a rolling 10 years performance but the problem with only having the bottom four clubs in the lottery some will accuse the 11th side of tanking in round 22 so they can finish 12th so they can participate in the lottery. It'll be never ending. The whole thing is flwaed but what bemuses me prior to the draft if a club who clearly wasn't going to make the finals started playing kids who might not've been up to it in their own right, they were considered wise in their prep for the next year. Going home on the tram after a 20 goal flogging was justified with "ah well at least we blooded two new players today"

what about a system whereby from a particular year a draft order is developed according to a win/loss ratio over the previous 10 years or by a random draw?

eg from 2010 the first club gets number 1 in 2010 then in 2011 gets number 16, then number 2 then 15 then 3 then 14. every club then is assured a number 1 pick over the space of 16 years.
theoretically each club's first round draft numbers tally 17 over two years balancing one year's high pick with a corresponding lower pick the next year.

The picks can be traded and priority picks can occur if a team say wins 7 games or less over a period of 2 years. these priority picks occur after the first draft round. It also seems to accord neatly with the AFL's wish for draws etc to be equal over time.

i'll call it the chardonnay system.
