Given that the competition is now "national" and the system operates under a draft/salary cap mechanism the competition is fundamentally different to what it was pre mid 1980's when it was a suburban Victorian competition.

Why is this a case of foot-in-mouth? Akermanis is only saying what a great many people in Melbourne are already saying, including officials from other AFL clubs.

What he said was:

- does not believe Melbourne will be able to support 10 football clubs in the future; (That's a distinct probability)
- seven or eight clubs in Melbourne would be more realistic. (That's also a distinct possibility given the AFL has stated that there will be second AFL clubs located in SE Qld and Sydney and that a relocated Melbourne club is their preference)
- believes the Gold Coast could sustain a football club. (So does the AFL commission and by 2012 at the latest)
- creating a new team from scratch would be very difficult - because it will take years to build a competitive list. (That's nothing startling either. We've seen examples of how hard it is to build an AFL club from scratch)
- admitted the Western Bulldogs were one of the teams that was in danger of relocating or merging, but he said the club was now profitable. (I'd agree with that one also)

There's nothing particularly startling or left-field about the above, even if he does play for the Western Bulldogs. Many people share exactly the same views. Sam Kekovich and Allan Aylett for example.

If it had been anyone else, would there have been a problem with the story?

You answered your own question. If I was a Bulldog fan I wouldn't take too kindly to these comments. It is not the person that made the comment that is the issue, just that the club that pays that persons bills right now might be the mob that gets shifted out of Melbourne. I already stated the Dogs had improved their off field performance but they'd still be one of the first cabs off the rank. I didn't think my post was all that mystifying to be honest.

I think many Bulldogs fans would agree that there are too many clubs in Melbourne and that maybe a couple have to either relocate or merge. Naturally they don't want it to be their club, but they know they've often been talked about as a canditate. What Akermanis said wouldn't be news out of left field.

Rik E Boy wrote: It is not the person that made the comment that is the issue, just that the club that pays that persons bills right now might be the mob that gets shifted out of Melbourne.

Not if they remain profitable. Akermanis qualified his statement about how the Western Bulldogs were one of the teams that was in danger of relocating or merging, but that the club was now profitable. While it remains proftiable, obviously they won't be going anywhere.

The AFL commission can't just relocate or merge clubs at their whim.

Perhaps in the past. I think that situation is rapidly changing.

I just don't think what Akermanis said - this time - was a case of "foot in mouth" and that's all I was commenting on.

I much prefer to hear Jason Akermanis speak then anyone else currently playing AFL. He must be the only player that speaks his mind and voices his opinion. Every other player tows the club line and mutters boring cliche's. Akermanis at least provides an actual opinion and even if you dont agree with what he says it at least provokes thought and opinion.

Also the fact that clubs have already sounded him out about assistant coaching roles once he's finished playing means that many coaches think what he's saying isnt always that far fetched.

The way I look at that is one relevant premiership.

Next all the Port Adelaide plebs will start rattling off all of their premierships.
