I can't see why people say Hird won two premierships, Harvey 0 as confirmation that Hird is better than Harvey.

Using that logic Bob Skilton was a hack cos he won no premierships?! Actually he played what no or 1 final - what a DUD!

Good question that I am sure you,as Buckley would,change your mind as you recall moments,games and seasons these two have had.

Hird is not unlike Kouta in some ways.Kouta was the first "athlete" (for want of better word) to play the game (as such),and I think Hird redefined the mid fielders role somewhat too.He has shown 6'1" ers can play tall and small,and many of todays modern midfielders would have no problems if any one suggested they mould their game on Hird's.

Harvey on the other hand showed endurance not many fans,or even modern day players would think possible.For mine,Harvey had limited "skills",struggled to kick it 50,not a goal kicker,but an absolute star of the game.On my thoughts,Hird is better,but as I said,as me in a few weeks after some reading/research and I could change my mind.Close race.

Flags aren't really a major think to compare players though. It would be like saying Dunstall was better than Lockett because he played in multiple premierships and Lockett none. Their achievements were fairly similar, but i'd say Lockett had a better career and was a better player, although only just.

Dunstall was better than Lockett IMHO.

Dunstall was more consistant, but was also blessed to play in a better side with the ball getting delivered exceptionaly well. Lockett on his day was better IMHO.

Comparing these players whilst good for discussion is a pretty pointless exercise as there's no definitive answer ... Harvey has always been one of my favourite players of alltime, Hird could play KPP though, so it get's hard to compare apples for apples.

Voss as mentioned is right up there and I also rate Paul Kelly pretty highly in terms of midfielders.

Given this thread has migrated somewhat into a Dunstall v Lockett vote, I'm going to throw the great man Garry Ablett Snr into the ring as better than both.

IMO, he's the best player to have ever played the game.

I'd agree with that, Ablett could never be thought of as a better full forward than Lockett and Dunstall. He may have arguably been a better all round forward, but spent a great proportion away from FF.

As for Robran, have only seen a little bit of him, but hes universally regarded as SA's greatest ever footballer so i'm happy to go with that.

Ablett, Robran and D.Jarman are the only 3 footballers that Ive watched do extraordinary things thinking I'd never see anyone else do those feats on the footy fields.
I wouldn't have D.Jarman close to my estimates of best players of all times but I just thought I'd add his name as he and the other 2 are the only one's I saw that did stuff that was unbelievable. I still occasionally slow down some of D.Jarman's goals from the 97 GF frame by frame but for the life of me I can't work out how he got the ball at times, Im sure he cheated by using magic.
If its a vote for the best player I stand by my choices.
If we want to get into a vote as to who is the most consistent player then I'll win hands down as I was crap in all 50 games I played for Noarlunga C Grade.

After Ablett i actually think D Jarman is possibly the most skillful player thats ever played the game.

His left foot goal in the pocket in the 87 SANFL G/F is the one that will always stay in my mind as he was a virtual rookie and such feats weren't expected of him by the football public at large.

The other player to show freakish skills was Daicos. Whilst not really up there with the other players listed, some of the goals he kicked had to be seen to be believed.

So the occasional freakish game makes you a better player that someone who is consistantly very good OK, using that theory Ablett was the greatest.

Malcolm Blight always maintained that G Ablett Snr would have won a Brownlow if he had got himself fit enough to play midfield. So the fact that he was potentially not as fit as he could be and still was such an outstanding player in the forward line makes him right up there in my book.

D Jarman is the most skillful player I have seen.

That would have helped with him getting votes, there wasn't too many others he was playing with to take them from him. Dunstall had plenty of others polling votes around him.
