He was an important part of our build up to success in 04,perhaps gun was the wrong word, but in a top of the table side (Port circa 02-04) he was one of our best half dozen.

In my book, and blinded by the jumper he once wore (NOT CENTRALS),he was a gun for mine. Each to their own.

(Cue thread off track discussing whether Dew was a 'gun' or not.LOL)

I'm with you Booney, I always rated him in the top 8 or so players in our side when he was playing well.

Very handy pick up for the Hawks. Good luck to him.

the other risk

I am not convinced that the modern game will help Stewie, the game is now quicker with less stoppages

Maybe a little, but Dew is 29 next year, has had a year off, and has always had fitness issues, i doubt he'd do much at Hawthorn if he got drafted.

I agree there

I meant more in terms of the fact that if Dewie now wants to play again what if he just stuck it out before Port would have had a quality player to help mentor the young guys last year and the next few.

Having said that, Dewie on 5AA a while ago said that he was completely burnt out and taking time off from the game was, to him, absolutely the right decision

Yeah i agree Hondo, thats why i prefaced my comment with "maybe a little" - in other words i dont think Choco would be disappointed that Dew is a possibility to play for the Hawks instead of Port, because I'd say that Williams would think Dew wouldn't be able to offer much at AFL levels in his late 20's after a year off. He (Choco) would be a little bit annoyed about the way in which Dew "retired" though.

He will be a great fit for the Hawks, take out Crawford and who are their experienced players there now that Dixon and Vanderburg have moved on?....Clarkson has seen the gap (26-30 yo's) and smartly filled it with Dewie...he knows no matter how good your kids are you cant win a flag without experieinced players....

Couldn't have put it better Dutchy. Clarkson is a smart operator, he wouldn't have decided to draft Dew without seeing a good reason for it and I think you have nailed that reason right there.

Wasnt Dew lucky to be in that 04 premiership side? If i remember rightly, he was on the borderline of being dropped. He was basically the last man picked.
I used to class Dew as a bit of a frontrunner, but my opinion of him changed in 05/06, when i thought he played very well seeing Port had a lean time in general.

The Crows do seem to be moving in the direction that they appear to be genuinley interested in Dew. Dew if he can get fit and ready can well kick goals on target which is what the Crows need more of at present, so there is a distinct possibility that this could occur.....

I saw Dew in Melbourne on AFL grand final weekend downing Vodka raspberries like they were going out of fashion. It is fair to say that he was well overweight. He would have been nudging 115 -120kg. I hope he gets fit cos he can play but from what I saw I cant see him dropping the 15-20kg he needs to to be able to play at that level again. It is going to take an about turn in his lifestyle. Good luck to him if he gets drafted.

Surely Chambers would still be a better bet for a mature age pick??

Dew is obviously a different type of player, but too much of a risk I reckon.
