I can understand the reasoning behind wanting to give the least up for any player as football is now a business. Carlton wants to get Judd at the lowest price and preferably while keeping its #1 pick thereby giving itself the biggest opportunity to succeed.
I believe that Judd is worth a #1 pick in any draft - brownlow, 100+ games of mostly very high quality, norm smith medallist so we know he plays well in big games - a known quantity versus a player that may or may not make it. Look at hodge, he took four years to really hit his straps while josh fraser is still probably (to my mind) has not reached his full potential.
I struggle to see why carlton supporters are so precious regarding the number 1 pick, to the stage whereby some posters on other forums have said that they'd sooner keep the #1 rather than get Judd; drafting is still hit and miss. Kreuzer may be brilliant but it may take him 4-5 years to reach the consistent plateau that judd has reached over the last four years.
If I was Carlton, which clearly I'm not, I'd proffer 3 and a player, then 3,20 and a player but would be prepared to give up #1 at the death knock to secure his services.
cheers
