GWS Season 2012

Talk on the national game

Interesting to note how the two new clubs have gone about getting their starting lists. GWS seem to be targeting as many experienced players as possible then loading up with the youth. GC went the opposite loading up with youth then getting a few older blokes in to fill up the space.

IMO Sheedy is trying to "one up" GC by having a better first up season. The older players may not be such a bad thing, they would have to cut thier list back in the second year like GC and if he has a group of older guys that are only there for the one year his decision may not be so difficult in the end. I think one of the biggest issues GC had was experience and with some older more experienced players around the place the younger guys may develop a little quicker and better.

if true im not sure that we (power) should be entitled to it as we basically retired the pair!

anyone else with there thoughts

I think Chad's hand was forced, he was pushed and didn't jump.

Brogan on the other hand, I believe, retired on his own accord. At this point, although uncontracted they are still on Ports list? ( Until Oct 31? )

If they are not delisted at Oct 31 does this mean they need to be offered a new contract? so if I understand this correct Port want compensation for players that they dont want anyway? What would be a fair compensation to begin with? They would probably get whatever draft pick that they have anyway if they retire.

I think Port have every right to enquire about the level of compensation they have ie making it impossible for GWS to target any of their players next year. But if the deal starts getting messy and stands in the way of the 2 going to GWS they should step away and let it be. They must not sour the relationship between the club and these 2 greats!!!!

They'll probably just get de-listed and GWS can then draft them, cant imagine anyone else drafting them unless they agreed to it.

If Mark Harvey doesn't get a senior coaching role next year I would be surprised not to see him re-join Sheeds in an assistant coaching role.

I agree. I guess this will show Brogan and Cornes just how much GWS want them. If GWS want them, give us a pick in the third round which in all reality they ( GWS ) dont need and keep us happy.

I agree Port have every right to go down this path and I am sure Brisbane are watching with Luke Power and his circumstances.

I didnt realise until last night their motive and if they get this through then smart move IMO, I agree if this stops the guys playing on then they should back off.

If ANY club can use the rules to their advantage, then IMHO they are stupid if they don't ... Sentiment shown to an individual(s) at the expense of rate of development is just plain dumb in the business world of football these days.

Cornes I'll wear, but do you have any information ( other than from this site or The Advertiser ) to suggest Brogan was pushed out? Also can you define "retirement" to me in your response.

Peter Rohde said last night on 5AA that Brogan and Primus etc discussed his future and they decided ammicably that a retirement was best.... does that mean he was pushed, does that mean he thought he couldnt go on? Who knows

 well picked out!

I think Port would have wanted him to do full pre season and try and play maximum games if he stayed. GWS is do what you can and play when you can!

Well I think Port Power are between a rock and a hard place here.

GWS are only going to draft them in teh PSD if they are delisted players (GWS know that no other club is going to draft them well - Cornes is an option for some clubs based on rumours I've heard). However the point remains none of the other clubs will trade for them will only pick thrm up if they are delisted.

Therefore Port have to make a decision delist them before the November draft (makes them available) or offer them new contracts and keep them on their list for 2012 and delist two other players who are (before this came to light) in their plans for the future of the club post 2012...

I hope Port play hardball, we'll have both Cornes' at the Bay next year with the "one Club" paying their salaries!!!!
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Not sure but I suspect it is the same reason why Gunstan ain't playing for Centrals, doesn't want to risk injury in SANFL finals.

Professional footballer looking after himself. Like Ross Lyon has done, (looking after himself as a coach with a better contract) Luke Ball, Judd etc. Club loyalty went out the window in 1966 when Barassi went from Melbourne to Carlton.

As a Glenelg person it's disappointing he ain't playing "but you have to respect the ball player [who wants to finish a career]" (paraphrase from Bull Durham).

Hey, you debate the morality of this all day long and yep Port arguably deserve something for at least one of them. However as the rules currently stand they ain't going to get nothing for either of them as they are only going to be picked up if they are delisted.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

So Port dont have to technically delist Brogan and Cornes until as late as the 30th November and then this leaves GWS with only the Pre-season draft to take them, by which time, you would expect, many other more attractive recently delisted players could be available.

Port and Brisbane doing what they should in protecting their own interests and putting the pressure back on GWS to show how much they are willing to give up to get the players in question.

Very interesting story unfolding.
