Geelong v Collingwood Preliminary Final

Talk on the national game

The residents of Geelong would have to be pinching themselves right now... two grand finals, a state league premiership and a national league premiership in their sights! This has never happened before in the history of football to my knowledge!

Geelong Football Club -- VFL and AFL premiers for 2007?

1st of all, when done to those brave internet heroes who come on here after the game & bagged Collingwood. you saw the game, if you think sticking the boots in after a performance like is warranted, good luckto you- you know f**k all about footy.

Wedgie, thanks for being gracious in victory- maybe it'll rub off on some of the window lickers who are posting while they're parents at "parents without partners" tonight.

I couldn't be any more proud of the Pies efforts tonight- they threw everything at them, including the kitchen sink, & came up a tad short.

Don't waste your chance- cash in with a flag!

well well well, Collingwood played the match on their terms for most of the game and did a good job in controlling the midfield and restricting the cats running game - especially through the middle.

the Eddie-Jet from last week just failed to get them over the line.

A few times I thought we were going to kick away with it, but to the pies credit they kept on chasing and I was still very anxious in the last 20 seconds......

there are a lot of ifs and buts, but geelongs poor goal-kicking in the 3rd 1/4 almost cost them playing next week.

Top game Collingwood never gave in and gave Geelong a top match. I was impressed with the effort of all the players on the field. Cats look rusty from the week off but the hard hitout is just what the cats need.
Collingwood are looking good for the next few years to come get rid of Buckley pick up Judd and the Bush might win a flag or two.
This is the first time since 1989 that the cats have two teams in a grand final and if they both win it will be the first time since 1937 that the cats have won both the seniors and reserves premierships.

Morning boys. Christ, nearly had a ******* heart attack last night. Collingwood played out of their skins and I thought my comment about North Melbourne's poor kicking in the 98 Granny in my Rucci sledge thread was going to come back and bite me on the ar5e! The Pies reminded me of that knight in the Holy Grail. 'It's only a flesh wound'! We just couldn't shake them off! The end of the match was horribly reminiscent of the end of that 2005 semi final with a touch of deja vu about the 2004 Prelim when we won everywhere except on the scoreboard.

For Geelong, Brad Ottens saved the day. His supremacy on the ball laid the foundations of Geelong's dominance in general play. Yes, I said dominance. During the second and third terms we had nearly three times the inside 50's that Collingwood had but we were outscored during this period. Collingwood's efficiency was remarkable and my hat got hurled at the TV when Didak scored that freakish goal. At one stage in the third we had racked up 1.7 FFS!!

Bomber Thompson was not happy at the end of the game and rightly so. I'll think you'll see a better Geelong run out next week. Spare a thought for Punkys Pies who were full of self belief..these blokes just don't know how to give in. The difference between Collingwood and many of Geelong's opponents this year is that the Pies always seemed to get that goal to keep in touch where other sides allow us to sneak out to four or five goal leads and then it's all over (even Port did this at AAMI Stadium).

Right now I'm at the Arkaba Hotel....bring on the Granny!

regards,

REB

Yes REB,take out the influence of Ottens and the game could well have gone to Collingwood.

Interestingly last night, when Blake was on the ground, although I am comparing him to the way Ottens was playing he seemed ineffective. Is King a silly chance for a recall at Blake's expense?

Also,Colligwood showed that Geelong dont like going wide into attack, and they also dont like it when their back half have to respect their opponent and not be allowed to drop off.Early when Didak was on the bench and Harley was on Medhurst, both Hunt (who ended up on Didak, and had to watch him) and Harley (who went to Rusling when he began to get the ball, this when Milburn was briefly off) I think this showed Geelongs strength (run from defence) can be used as their downfall. The way to do this?

Well, when the Cats all stream forward,Milburn,Scarlett,Hunt and co you must, you must cause a turn over in the middle of the ground and get it back into their defensive 50 asap before the above mentioned get back.Easier said than done.I was going to write about how effective the Cats are going forward, but they were not that last night, not as effective as they potentially can be.

For me,keep Mooney,Johnson quiet up front.Keep Ablett as quiet as you can and make Milburn and Scarlett accountable, throw in four or five of your team playing blinders, and a dose of luck and some one, somone might just beat them.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Christ how good was that game last night. Ok at times both teams made mistakes, but heck I enjoyed watching it. Collingwood through the kitchen sink at Geelong. Beaty of a match.

Ottens, Ablett were good, Mooney poped up only when Geelong really needed him to. Anyway Geelong are through, REB had a heart attack and Wedgie may or may not be drunk somewhere

In my view that was the best game of the finals so far ...

Standard and skill wise, a fair bit ahead of what we have seen so far.

A close game is just what the Cats needed ...... maybe their fans didn't tho

But it will keep them on their toes for next week rather than think they've got it in the bag

Well done to the Pies they played very well

Great game of footy, well done to the catters, hell of a lot more skill and class than Collingwood, but full credit to the woods played a great game of footy. In the end could have gone either way but the team that deserves to be in the grand final held on and got there. To all those woods supporters they should be proud of what their side has acheived this year
