I think it was too late in 1996 to do this. That should have been done in 1990 or not at all. By 1996 the Crows had stolen too much momentum from a potential second composite team.
Where I think the SANFL screwed up (in hindsight) was in not letting Port do what it apparently wanted to do and it's members voted to do. That being to leave the SANFL altogether and move into the AFL. Instead, they set up two "Port Adelaide"s which has split the supporter base, alienated the PAMFC out at Ethelton and caused all sorts of problems including the pointless and endless debates about which Port Adelaide is which. I reckon Port had enough supporters at the time to keep an AFL team healthy so long as those supporters only had 1 team to support and hand over their money to.
I don't think we'll ever see a new AFL team set up like that again. I reckon hard lessons have been learnt. Any CDFC fan that has similar aspirations for their club will need to get their heads around it meaning the end of their participation in the SANFL (not that I think that will ever happen).
Not that we can go back in time and change it and not that I have the answer to it now other than persisting with the decision and making the best of it, if possible.
