Not a bad pick up for Melbourne considering he was originally taken at 8...

Pick 37 for pick 8 is indeed a poor result for Adelaide especially when the development time is taken into account .Ya win some ya lose some.

forget the fact that Meesen was drafted at pick 8 after playing JUNIOR football......in reality he is only worth a third round pick cause he sucks at AFL football

just like the share market- your worth increases with good/solid performances, or decreases with no/poor performance...

Did "Weedy" get some magic beans as well. Seriously why do they send him over here? No one wants to deal with him. In fact why is he on the payroll at all??? ](*,)

To be honest, Meeson is still un tried in my opinion at AFL level. only 2 games and not much game time make shim hard to judge.

No, as Adelaide weren't trading with Fremantle...

There's generally a reason why someone's only received just the 2 games though ... I like Johnny Meeson, but right here, right now, he's not an AFL Footballer ... With further development (which continues with big men later than most) and returning to his home state, hopefully he can flourish and change that.

That raises another question, CP.

If a ruckman needs extra time to develop, why don't clubs wait until they are 20 to draft them? Let them cut their teeth in the state leagues.

I know that the answer is that they might miss out on a star, but it beats wasting a top pick on some lad who wants to go home 2 years later.

Pick 8 turns in to a third rounder... Oh well.
I don't buy in to that "but he was a top 10 pick" crap really.

Stiffy was pick 68 or 73 or something silly... but would probably go for a first rounder if traded now. Can't go both ways!

It always happens.

WCE have had Gardiner, McDougall, and Sampi all top 6 picks who have been traded away for virtually nothing. (Sampi may get delisted)

I suppose at least we got some worth out of Gardiner though.

If you went back and traced all the draft selections over the years every club would have a few   unfortunately. On the plus side, every club has a few late draft bargains such as Johncock.

Putting pick 37 in perspective .... Aker went for pick 32 and he was a Brownlow medallist. Before anyone jumps me, I know they are completely different cases but maybe helps some Crows fans feel better about the Mattner or Meesen deals.
In between signatures .....

Strength of the 2006 draft >>>>>>> 2007 and therefore more clubs willing to part with picks. Aker was 30 at the time of trading and only had 2-3 years left.

That is right - and you only have to look at the % of top 10 draft picks each year that turn out to be duds. There are many more than what people would think.

ie Adelaide used pick 7 in 2000 (it's highest ever pick to date I believe??) to pick Laurence Angwin. #-o We all know what a train wreck he turned out to be and where his career went.... :toimonster:

Apparently they weren't going to use it, and Carlton wanted pick 30 (which has gone to Richmond because of the Mitch Morton trade).
