Essendon Coach

Talk on the national game

As an Essendon supporter, who had them finishing bottom 3, now feels they could be anything from 7-15th, Richmond Im afraid have a strangle hold on the spoon early days.

I more than most was shattered when I heard they appointed Knights as coach, I also thought when playing Mathew Knights was a great little player.

What is becoming evident from my point of view is
1 Players are looking a lot more trim
2 All of a sudden there is speed over the oval
3 They are playing that taxing non stop running game

"So for this Essendon supporter the jury is out and a surprise could even happen, end of the day Knights is coach and has to be given a fair go as early days there is improvement"

he won more finals than Neil Craig

Ayres won 1 in 2002 v Melbourne
And another in 2003 v West Coast
Total record 2-4

Craig won 1 in 2005 v Port
Another in 2006 v Freo
Total record 2-4

So even on the W-L front but Ayres had 5 seasons and Craigy's done his in 3 - so Craigy ahead for mine

Wrong. Ayres won two finals coaching Geelong in 1995. Ayres 4-5, Craig 2-4 and Craig has yet to get a team into a Grand Final.

I believe that Knights is backing his players and deserves a little credit...at least for now.

Their are alot out there waiting & expecting Knights to fail, i'm very surprised by your initial thoughts on Matthew, every one deserves a fair go & Matty's no exception, he has so much knowledge of the game & obviously once retired from his playing days set out to explore the coaching side of things.
His time here wasn't all failure, being not Port was his down fall in the Port supporters eyes & was never given a chance, an absolute ( disgrace ) his first year not making the finals was always going to be difficult considering Ports finals history & the board had him hung after the halfway mark of year by introducing the FAB 7, who i believe plotted his downfull.
I believe Matthew has learnt alot from his time at Port & his time especially under Sheedy & coaching the Bendigo Bombers has made him a better coach.
Its good to see these young lads at Essendon embrase his game plan & execute it game day, something Port Magpies didn't do under Knights as alot were still living in the past.
You can see the players at Essendon are enjoying the change of guard & have been given a licence to take the opposition on at all costs, playing some exciting footy, as Mcveigh said after the game their not getting carried away with things as its only NAB cup their thoughts are on round 1.

I've said it before that Matthew Knights would not have been my choice and also I said that I hope he proves me wrong.

Yes Essendon so far in the NAB cup do look good but remember it is only February and lets wait until the real games start next month. Carlton looked good last year when they won the NAB cup and where did they finish up after the minor round.

From how Essendon went last year my expectations are thet this year they should at least fininsh in the top 8. So hopefully the form they have been showing in the NAB cup continues into the minor rounds and I will gladly say I was wrong about Knights.

Wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

I am the first Bombers fan to put his hand up and say i have egg on my face.

Knights has put the kids in with speed and from todays great effort i applaude what he has done pre-season and against the kangaroo's today, might not go top or even make the eight but when i see a side play that brand of football it excites and gives you hope as a supporter.

I think a few other posters should read also what they posted and get a wet flanel and start wiping the egg of their face

mate it is only game 1, lets wait and see, he is off to a good start, however 1 game does not make a career, he needs to be judged later in the season

Robert Shaw won his first 4-5 games with the AFC in convincing fashion

Promising for the Bombers SO FAR, but lets not forget its round 1. Last year they beat the Crows in Adelaide but did very little after that. But definitely looking promising.

I give Essendon plenty of credit for their performance today but i still have them marked down for a bottom 4 position on the ladder.

Why were ROO'S very poor Dutchy? Essendon made them look poor.
Give some credit where its due pal, your sounding like alot of those feral Port Magpies supporters that know nothing about football, aswell as coaching, all they want to do is SLAG Knightsy when they can.
Its only first round yeh but this bloke has them playing an exciting brand of footy & thats what we all want to see when we go to a footy game.
