Does anyone know what the reason for this is? The only thing I can think of is for recognition if there is a photo in the press from behind the players so people reading know what league they are playing in. Any other thoughts???

Intellectual property ... most of these clubs have been around a hell of a lot longer than the AFL has and I do believe that more people follow the AFL because of their alignment to clubs as opposed to "the AFL".
As for the names on the back of the guernsey, I don't think we need them. Especially if they're going to put the AFL logo at the base of each letter...

So instead of having a crack at Essendon & Collingwood, have a crack at the AFL for using a feather duster to deal with the situation...1980 Tassie Medalist wrote:
You need to remember the as part of the licence agreement the AFL "owns" the clubs logos, colours and guernseys must fit within the AFL rules on logos and colours - all part of the privilige of being part of the AFL. This was established in the early 90s to prevent breakaway leagues forming.
In other words if Eddie and Kevin gets pissed off with teh AFL they can't just pull Collingwood and Essendon out and start a new competition like Brisbane and Canberra did as part of the Super League war.
We'll they can but they can't be called "Collingwood" & "Essendon" wear black/white/red and call themselves the Bombers or the Magpies.
So in short given they AFL hold the copyright to the guernseys so to speak (are trade marks of the AFL), the AFL can do what they want with respect to the guernseys![]()

No problems, for example the Packer empire would design them new uniforms and pay them enough money so that even Collingwood would discover they had no problem wearing other colours!

Punk Rooster wrote:all this talk of alternate strips is a red herring- mind you, I'm actually for it, but as each club has a minimum of 2 colours, their is no need to add colours, just be smarter about the designs.
By smarter, instead of having a jumper looking like the Sistine Chapel, keep the design basic (less busy), & the problem is solved.
