AFL logo printed on guernsey numbers

Postby MW » Sun Feb 25, 2007 3:50 pm

Has anyone noticed that the AFL logo is now printed on each number on a guernsey now???

Does anyone know what the reason for this is? The only thing I can think of is for recognition if there is a photo in the press from behind the players so people reading know what league they are playing in. Any other thoughts???

:? :?

Carlton have a round neck guernsey instead of a v neck. thats new. Plus I think the AFL are copying the round ball game, with the EPL and the A-League

It seems a bit hypocritical they monitor and limit the use of sponsorship logos on guernseys, but then add the AFL logo to wherever it can fit. Intellectual property ... most of these clubs have been around a hell of a lot longer than the AFL has and I do believe that more people follow the AFL because of their alignment to clubs as opposed to "the AFL".

As for the names on the back of the guernsey, I don't think we need them. Especially if they're going to put the AFL logo at the base of each letter...

You need to remember the as part of the licence agreement the AFL "owns" the clubs logos, colours and guernseys must fit within the AFL rules on logos and colours - all part of the privilige of being part of the AFL. This was established in the early 90s to prevent breakaway leagues forming.

In other words if Eddie and Kevin gets pissed off with teh AFL they can't just pull Collingwood and Essendon out and start a new competition like Brisbane and Canberra did as part of the Super League war.

We'll they can but they can't be called "Collingwood" & "Essendon" wear black/white/red and call themselves the Bombers or the Magpies.

So in short given they AFL hold the copyright to the guernseys so to speak (are trade marks of the AFL), the AFL can do what they want with respect to the guernseys

If the AFl own the rights to jumpers and designs, then why do they have so much trouble getting certain clubs to have an away jumper. They should be able to say "heres your away strip, wear it or else"

I don't have an issue with it as at least it standardises the style of numbers used, it used to be a real mess.

PS Carlton weren't the only AFL club to have an NSL club.

PPS Even my kids asked WTF was going on with Carlton's shorts and they only saw 30 secs of that game.

I believe you're right. I actually hate the AFL, and everything it stands for. The only reason I am interested at all is because a club I have followed since 1968 (and won 8 flags in that time) unforunately found themselves involved in it

Although not opposed to a national competition in theory, Hawthorn was one of two clubs who voted against the expansion of the VFL. The other club was Collingwood who, ironically, has probably gained more from it's involvement in the AFL than any of the other 11 clubs.

If Hawthorn left the AFL for whatever reason, it would give me the perfect excuse to ignore AFL football altogether. I can envisage the day when the AFL award the Eddie McGuire Trophy to the club with the highest profit margin for each season, and over time this would be more prestigious than the premiership cup!!

I recall one season when the membership renewals came out, they were actually cheaper than the year before. The Hawthorn Board announced they were cheaper because they had a good year financially and decided to pass it on to the MEMBERS!!! You would never see that happening in today's AFL.

MAte, I was using it as an example, same goes for all the clubs if they wanted to "jump" ship into a break-away competition.

No problems, for example the Packer empire would design them new uniforms and pay them enough money so that even Collingwood would discover they had no problem wearing other colours!

Ah yes, but the AFL knows that part of a clubs attractions to its supporters is its guernsey, colours, emblem and nickname. Some will follow no matter what happens but not all will, thereby decreasing a clubs commercial appeal...

all this talk of alternate strips is a red herring- mind you, I'm actually for it, but as each club has a minimum of 2 colours, their is no need to add colours, just be smarter about the designs.
By smarter, instead of having a jumper looking like the Sistine Chapel, keep the design basic (less busy), & the problem is solved.
Also, clubs get to save face.

eg- Collingwood have their traditional jumper at home, away could be their black logo on a white jumper, or white logo ona black jumper (depending on the home club)
Brisbane could actually have a jumper with blue piping (?), predominant yellow, with a marron lion & numbers (or blue with yellow lion & numbers) again, depending on the opposition.

Exactly. It's as simple as that. Other sports are able to pull it off without any problems, and yet for some reason (known as Eddie McGuire) the AFL clubs can't seem to be able to do it.

West Coast didn't have the AFL logo on their numbers last night. Anyone know why? Old guernseys perhaps?
