PORT'S TEAM FOR '06

Postby GWW » Wed Nov 23, 2005 11:56 pm

Port should be able to put a reasonably handy side on the park in 2006, this is how i would pick the side, although of course a lot will depend on injuries:

LADE WHITE MAHONEY

MOTLOP TREDREA DEW

LONIE K CORNES CASSISSI

S BURGOYNE CHAPLIN WILSON

BISHOP WALELIN WALSH

1st Ruck INT: WANGANEEN FRANCOU THURSTANS ECKERMANN

BROGAN
C CORNES
P BURGOYNE

Chad Cornes would have to be in the back six. If this side took the park, the defense would leak like a government department. This side is still overly reliant on Tredrea in attack and Lonie and Cassisi does not inspire fear on the wing.

Port 6-8 for mine due to a solid home record. Forget about too many away wins boys.

REB makes a good point about the wings there. not much fear there. But the side looks reasonable to be competative at the very least. Although i would say they should invest in Eckerman and Thomson a bit and try to bring Ebert on a bit more. ie play him in the middle or on the wing.

Think Dew needs to play his sweeping role across half-back

FB: Wilson Wakelin Pettigrew
HB: Dew C. Cornes Cassisi
C: S. Burgoyne K. Cornes Lonie
HF: Motlop Tredrea Pearce
FF: Lade White Wanganeen

1R: Brogan, P. Burgoyne, Francou

Interchange (in no order): Chaplin, Salopek, Ebert, Surjan, Thurstans, Walsh, Symes, Francou, Eckermann, Thomson, Mahoney

Would think with Tredrea taking close attention that S. Burgoyne could also be value spending some time at FF!

I would say white and Lade will have to play big roles up forward with Tredrea going to recieve close attention. And if they cant stand up then Port probably wont be able to make the eight.

I think Port when they struggle a little, either have Tredders playing too far up the field where his impact is limited (ie, Centre Wing) or just rasing an arm in the air calling for a long ball ... He needs to be constantly on the move and no further than 70 metres from goal imho ...

Wouldn't be surprised to see White on a half-forward flank playing a Darren Smith type-role.

Or down back.

I do agree with most of the points made, i do believe though that Port started to turn the corner last season when Cornes was played on the ball, i guess a lot will depend on whether or not Chaplin can step up as a key defender. I dont think any of the teams on the site listed Kingsley, will be interesting to see if he plays much next season, and if so where. You'd have to think that unless he has an exceptional year hes likely to be delisted after next season, although then again, it could be a toss up between him and Francou, although then again they may decide to delist both or none of them.

Pettigrew is an interesting player. I thought after i picked my team that there probably should have been a position for him, but personally i'm not sure if hes ready as a key defender. The game he played against Brisbane was probably by far his best, but that was in the forward line. I thought about listing Dew on the wing but was unsure due to fitness doubts?? I admit Pearce is a probably one of the club's only real legitimate wingmen, lets hope he doesnt have 2nd year blues!!!! I listed Lonie on the wing, but then again he may be a perfect replacement for Montgomery in the back 6.

B: Wilson Pettigrew Wakelin
HB: Lonie Chaplin Dew
C: K Cornes C Cornes Pearce
HF: Motlop Thurstans Cassisi
F: Lade White Mahoney

R: Brogan S Burgoyne P Burgoyne

INT: Ebert Salopek Eckermann Francou

COACH: Wanganeen!!! [or almost anyone but a rigid Williams!]

I have to admit to being a Norwood and Crows supporter even if I did go to Woodville High - but living in Victoria I'd still like to see the other SA team improve just to get up the Melbourne commentators noses. With Tredders fit I'd keep him near [not right in] the goal square and move White out further. I can only see Chad Cornes as too risky a defender - good when it is going well - not otherwise.

Dont you mean "who cares about woodville west torrens eagles" the team that only wins a premiership once they've merged and have 2 teams to pick from. I think quite a lot of people care about Port Adelaide, one of the most successful clubs/teams in aussie rules history.

It was a fluke aided by Brian Cunningham's intercession - Alan Scott WAS right. [I'm not biased I'm a Norwood [and Crows] supporter living in Victoria!?]

The defensive game plan blew the earlier chances at the title. I was joking about Wangas - I have no idea whether he'd make a coach, but there's a good chance he'd be an improvement - so might Bucky??!

Believe Scott's quote was "Port will never win the flag with Williams as coach" or words to that effect.

Would appear Scotty's footy knowledge is about as thorough as his grasp of local politics.

Seems alot of people are omitting Adam Thomson - he is a fantastic in and under player and will only get better if allowed game time.

Agree Blue Boy ... Have seen very little of him but he moved well enough to grab my attention, definantly a player to watch in the coming years ..
