If say Port chose only local boys over the next 5 years, could it possibly, create
1. a group of players who truly want to be here.
2. A team of locals that would appeal to people.
3. Takes out the go home factor.
4. An environment where young locals know they have a much better chance of representing a club as well as their state.
5. Maybe they could also target young territorians, as they have no club affiliated to them, which could also reduce the go home factor.
6. This could create a club that represents the central corridor of Australia.
I realize that this means that you would miss out on some great talent at times, but I reckon you would much rather have a number 60 draft pick who plays for their club and state with passion and heart, than a slightly more talented Victorian at 40.
There is less of a settle in factor for one.
Not the perfect system, but haven't we just seen what Sydney achieved, with a team where over half of the players you hardly recognize. They want to be there and have created a culture, where dogged persistence can overcome pure talent ( Hawthorn)

How many Sydney or NSW players represented the Swans last week?

Most Cities in Australia are only an hour or two away by plane and with the modern technology there is no excuse for getting homesick. Most people I know would happily work interstate for $400k a year

Kernahan and co played league footy for years before they went over and it was their choice to do so. Pretty big difference between that and a kid being forced to play in Qld.

The amount of support these kids get these days is phenomenal though... host families etc.
Shaun Burgoyne was a SA lad - didn't stop him from leaving.

Did he get drafted to an interstate team? Or do you mean when he went to Hawthorn?

That's the system, that's life.
Uni kids move interstate all the time.
Some thrive, some cope, some don't.
All without a nice pro contract...scoob wrote:Shaun Burgoyne was a SA lad - didn't stop him from leaving.
Junior Burger leaving might have had something to do with deep-rooted problems at Port at the time.
Now we're just rooted...

Crows fans have to accept that not every player in the league wants to play for them. Pretty quick to trun on the lad - wishing his career ended and all... show a lot about their mentality.

Disappointed when Burgoyne left. But completely understood.
The wheels were already starting to fall off under Choco. No doubt he knew they we're gonna come flying off any second!
When he left, Burgoyne mentioned how he wanted to experience the footy culture in Melbourne. Now, if I was a young bloke, I'd be stoked to be drafted by a Melbourne club. Soak all that up. Strut around town like a superstar. Even play a bit of footy.
Still, it kills me seeing JB cruise around for the Hawks and winning crucial clearances.
Smoove as butter...
