Talk on the national game

State Of Origin

Postby LaughingKookaburra » Sat May 12, 2012 8:23 pm

There is currently discussion currently in the media on the re-birth of State Of Origin. Realistically this will not be the case with so much money involved in todays game and the potential loss of players through injury in this game.

I would personally be annoyed if the AFL went down the same path as 2 years ago when they did Victoria v The All-Stars as I see it as a massive slap in the face for other states than Victoria (Especially WA & SA).

I'm not fussed if Victoria will smash others ect, but i'd like to hear others thoughts.....

SA VS VIC absolutely. and im sure will have a lot of support.it has to be only those two though. if u come from another state, stiff sh!t. and play it once a year, mid season, maybe a double break in the season.

See I would see that as just a bigger slap in the face to WA. In some fairness to your opinion WA crowds for SOO were not as well supported as games @ footy park or the mcg.

I would love to see it as I have very fond memories of watching State games as a kid. Of course this was pre-Crows so it was great to see the VFL players come home and my favourite players from the SANFL up against the Vics.

Whilst this would never happen, here is my proposal:

Rank all of the states from 1-7,

For example:

1- Vic
2- SA
3- WA
etc.

Make an eighth team from somewhere (the MAJOR drawback to my proposal). Perhaps some sort of combined side feaaturing Internationals, All-Australian U-18s, AIS or something like that.

On the one weekend we have 4 matches ... 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 etc. that way every state is given a chance to play.

The winner of 1 vs 2 is crowned 'Champions of Australia' whilst the loser drops to 3rd. The winner of 3 vs 4 is then promoted as 'challengers' the following year.

Play these games every 2-3 years to add a bit of significance (ie World Cups, Olympics etc wouldn't be as significant if they were held annually) but not too far apart that if, say Tasmania, had a bunch of talented blokes come through they could hypothetically move up and challenge within their careers.

Also have an extended bench with perhaps 7-8 players to limit the workload and keep the clubs happy.

I reckon it would work.

Absolute waste of time. Eleven players from every state will miss the game from strained ovaries because the clubs won't risk them.

here is how the Muppets running the AFL should work it all the 18 teams are split into three pods of 6 teams. First off you play everyone once and then you play the the teams in your pod for the second time. This will make it 22 rounds.
after round 12 you have two weeks off For State of Origin. Vic V. SA. V WA. forget the rest. The state teams play each other twice over the two weeks. It is easy to work out

You'd fill footy park no hassles.

ONLY if the players took it seriously. That's the biggest issue and determines whether it will succeed or not.

I wouldn't mind if they had a State of Origin game but realistically the players have to drive this for it to happen. Personally I think SA should play WA at Footy Park, as soon as Victoria is involved it seems to turn into an Allies/Allstars crap. WA also started the whole thing in the first place. It doesn't always have to be about Victoria.

The AFL could fix it I reckon, but of course it involves cost, so they won't.

Maybe it's as simple as $50k payment to each player in the team(s) .. Total cost $2.2mil

Between the gate and TV Rights to the game surely they could re-coup that money?

Reckon it would require more than that.
Personally if someone from my club got seriously hurt playing SOO id hope Essendon would sue the ass of the AFL.
Maybe if the AFL agreed to compensate clubs for hurt players in a monetary way and even with an extra draft pick for long term injuries then we might get somewhere.
I think it would still end up the EPL where the players just get a report to say they have general soreness to get them out of playing for their country. I know Manchester United has banned most of their players from competing in the Olympics

Probably right, just trying to find a way around it .. IF there was good coin on offer then I'd think the players could get it written into their contracts to make them available.
I agree with you completely though on the injury scare, it's the same at SANFL level .. I'd be spewing if one of our boys copped a season ending injury playing for a club other than our own.

SOO was great up til around the mid 90's, but I cant help but think that the concept has lost its relevance in today's footy world.
