Geelong 2010 = Brisbane 2004

Talk on the national game

Geelong 2010 = Brisbane 2004

Postby MW » Fri Sep 17, 2010 10:14 pm

Watching tonights game there is a lot of similarity between Geelong 2010 vs Brisbane 2004. Both still good enough to make an impact in the finals but look too old and slow in the big game when it counted.

Surely Geelong won't fall down the hole like the Lions have;

Brisbane 2005 = 11th, 2006 = 13th, 2007 = 10th, 2008 = 10th, 2009 = 6th, 2010 = 13th.

Dunno, some big decisions need to be made at the Cat house. Too much of tonights 22 are on the wrong side of their careers and few youngsters been blooded. JPod the only player tonight that has played less than 50 games.

Do Geelong retain most of their list to have one more crack or do they start the rebuild now? Some senior players could be traded off and be value to some teams pushing for a flag in the next 1-2 years and the Cats could get some draft picks.

With Gaz gone, they can still build a solid team around Selwood, Byrnes, Kelly, Bartel, Taylor, Hawkins for another crack in 3-4 years time if they blood some kids. If they dont their fall may come as quick as Brisbanes

Can't be a fantastic team forever. I just hope they are remembered as that by the general public. I know I will remember them as that :(

Had they won 2007-09, I reckon they would have- like the Lions are remembered.
But that loss to Hawthorn means they'll rate higher than Essendon 2000, but lower than Brisbane 2001-2004.
Even though the Crows went back to back, I would not include them as a dominant team, in comparison to the above mentioned.

Brisbane were pipped at the post for 4 in a row by a hungry and desperate Port Adelaide outfit.

Geelong did not make 4 GF's in a row, nor did they win 3 in a row. The similarities are few and far between.

Ling looked as slow as a wet week and his punch to Browns guts late in the game showed his frustration, out of character for Lingy.

Hawkins is a spud. Why keep picking him when he has no impact on the game, Jolly spot on with his comments about Hawkins being feeble in the ruck contests.

Podsiadly, I said it at about round 14, flat track bully. Will they keep him for another year or start to move on now? Throw in Lonergan and Hunt and there could be 6 or 7 blokes with question marks over their heads. Mackie must be wondering WTF?

I dont think I remember one loss offering up so many questions.

They made a prelim and played a VERY good side last night. When u are smashed, everyone in the team looks ordinary. They are still a good team, they just won't be the dominant team as they have been. We must remember, they have been a great team over the years and things have to come to an end. Ablett will stay at Geelong and captain as of 2012. Mark my words

It's actually a good thing, because we will now give these young lads a crack and to be honest, they are pretty handy players, so it's not all doom and gloom.

and it is difficult to stay at the top for long periods of time, and Brisbanes record isone that will be very hard to equal.

The club probably should have done more in developing some juniors after last year, but having said that its hard to move on blokes who have put you in 3 gf and won 2, and then delivered a prelim final spot.

Heard Harley last night saying that any movement of players will be a job for Balme as Bomber likes to keeep the group together.

And we do have some good young juniors coming through, so im hoping that we dont completely bottom out.

they are a fantastic side, brisbane were a champion side.

What nonsense. We were beaten by a side that has overtaken us. We have I believe three guys who are done and they are Mooney, Ottens and Milburn. Hawkins is not a spud, but neither is he a ruckman. That was a terrible call by the match committee. The poor bloke looked confused out there. Playing foward during your entire career and then attempting to take on a white hot Jolly was always going to be ugly. Pods isn't a flat track bully either. You could have had Gary Ablett Snr up forward last night and he wouldn't have gotten a kick either. Terrible delivery from the midfield as Collingwood's superior pressure and work rate meant that Pods was never allowed into the game.

Why would Mackie be wondering WTF? He has been terrible all year, a real down hill skier. Little wonder he was in the stands. Try watching Geelong instead of repeating Liegh Mathews here Booney! Last night was no mystery, this unit is done and we were beaten by the new pacesetter who should go on to win the premiership.

Geelong 2010 = Brisbane 2004. But that doesn't mean that Geelong 2011-2015 has to = Brisbane 2005 -2010. What Geelong do over the next two seasons are crucial.

Option A - accept the window is closed and start rebuilding the squad

Ablett to Gold Coast - can we get Mundy from Freo? Not sure if he's signed or not the drums keep rumbling.

Ottens, Mooney and Milburn to get the tap on the shoulder. Replacements for these three are Blake, Hawkins and Taylor Hunt. Hawkins is a forward and he needs to go up there. Moons has had his day. Pods and Hawkins can team up as twin marking targets. Three has never worked and it didn't work for us. This leaves another spot open for a ruckman and it's time we gave West some extended game time. Dawson Simpson is still a bit raw but he should be given a few games also.

Other new blood that should be playing regularly next year include Menzel and Duncan who looked the goods and Hogan who so far hasn't.

The year after next it's probably bye bye to Joel Corey and Cameron Ling.

LADDER - Maybe a drop out of the top eight next year and the year after with our next crack as an up and coming side in 2013 if possible.

Option B - 'the blokes have earnt the right to retire on their terms'.

Milburn plays on but maybe Otto and Mooney go.

LADDER We stagnate on the ladder at 6-12 for ten years.

IN WELLS WE TRUST. We've got an excellent recruiter, now we really need him to recruit the next generation of Catters.

Only if Mundy is available. I reckon Scarlo has two years left tops. I don't agree with some of the comments online about his year. Any player of Scarlo's age who comes off a limited preparation is not going to be playing his best footy. Otto, Mooney and Milburn most go for mine and we should invest in youth and do a Vossy top up.

Hawkins is a forward

he doesnt have to take contested marks, just bring it to ground for stokes, byrnes, varcoe, ablett, chappy to get the crumbing goals
