Well, if the VFL website still says "no matter which way you look at it, the VFL is the best comp outside of the AFL" it must be.

AD has already committed to the 10 teams in Melbourne - I remember similar comments when North Melbourne rejected the GC offer.

The purist in me still says no more than 6 in a national comp surely?

But the realist in me now accepts the AFL is and always will be the old VFL simply expanded. If the TV revenue supports 16, 17 or 18 teams then there's no need to fold any teams. Besides, the NRL's experience with South Sydney has shown the damage culling teams can do even if the club needs constant $$$ drip feed.

I've built my bridge over this issue

1) 10 team National Competition.
4 Melb sides (or 6 in a 12 team comp)
2 Adelaide
2 Perth
Brisbane
Sydney

2) 2 x 8 team Divisions
as per existing, except Div 1 & Div 2- promotion & relegation each year.

That would make waayyyy too much sense though, and would enable each club to play every other club twice as well. Demetriou is a joke, i hope he stuffs up badly with West Sydney and GC17 and that becomes his lasting legacy.

That is the biggest load of absolute sh!t I have seen in a very long time, there is no pure facts that can back up those comments other than the dribble that he quoted.
I wish the bays and sturt played in the gf so 35-40 k people rocked up to AAMI to embarress that comment. F*****g Pole Smoker

Except the TV revenue drops substantially which means less money for grass-roots

And if the 4 Melbourne teams are Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood and Geelong (?) then bad luck for supporters of ... Bulldogs, NM, St Kilda, Hawthorn, Melbourne and Richmond. What do those supporters do?

Write off the history of 6 teams and watch the back-lash and watch the AFL die as the NRL rapidly sets up 2 new teams in Melbourne ....

When the game's popularity is increasing year by year why do we want to cull 7 teams :?

This is idea is as realistic as the Easter Bunny and as smart as putting Angry Anderson in a bat-mobile for 1/2 time entertainment.

Elitism isn't the answer ... the game isn't just about having the elite players and perfect skills. It's as much about the cinderalla stories, the history, the average player who bobs up and kicks a 5 in a grand final. It's about the Shane Ellen's, the Dean Wallis',the Josh Mahoney's, the Brisbane Bears turning into the 3-peat Lions. A lot of SANFL fans miss the old Woodville FC ... not because they were an elite team, but because they weren't.

Exactly my point

Guys like that gives us the stories that get relayed down through time. 6 years earlier the same player steals a premiership medallion from Derek Kickett.

In a 10 team comp Dean Wallis probably doesn't get a game

Gives us all something to reminisce and talk about ... I remember the day ... :D

Well the AFL junior structure all based on elitism, and the push for the SANFL to have just the u/18's.

Of course it is. Far better than the VAFA or the Dandenong association or the Ovens-Murray league. What? They play Victorian Rules on the other side of Mildura?

depends on the criteria, would have thought recent on field success would be in there....how good a club isnt necessarily measured by quantity of off field numbers

Lets be fair - drop all the Melbourne based teams back into the VFL and issue 5 Melbourne based licences for new teams to compete in a true national competition against Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, and Tassie. Everyone plays everyone twice, and everyone travels.
Oh, and the administration should not be in Melbourne..

Before you tell me - yes, I know its not going to happen!

That would be my preference.

It's all too late now but the best national comp would have been a divisional system (3 or 4) with the old VFL (inc Sydney and Brisbane), the WAFL, SANFL, and one from both the ACT and Tas.
There would have been far more passion from crowds watching North, Norwood, Central etc. etc. against say a Carlton or Collingwood than we will ever see from a Crows crowd
