PORT POWER APPRECIATION THREAD

Postby mal » Mon Jun 09, 2008 10:50 am

Ah well my turn to start a thread on the PA club.
As most would know I do supPORT both the Adelaide AFL franchises.

3 recent threads have started on about the latest PA choke

ARE PA WORSE THAN FREMANTLE by THIELE
This thread has as much credibility as a 90 year old woman getting pregnant

ARE PA IMPLODING OR JUST CHOKING by BAYMAN
started by a guy who hates PA with a passion
this stems from the PA dominance over GL in the old SANFL days ?

HOW TO BEAT PA IF... by SPELL CHECK
a rare sarcastic thread by the great Spelly

SANFL
There is this inert hatred of the PA AFL club on the SANFL footy site and out in the real world.
Its the perogative of these people to post thier hatred, not a prob.
HOWEVER
Its the rationality of why these people dislike the PA football club is what irks me at times
The SANFL dominance of PA over the other clubs from 1900-2000 and this mentality of us v PA.
Sour grapes in my opinion
PA bred and nutured some great SA players in those eras
PA had great spirit and courage
PA has won the most SANFL flags
SOME opposition supPORTers are jealous and intimidated by this success
NOT ME, I a NW supPORTer admire the magnificence of the SANFL magpies

AFL
In 1997 Port Adelaide joined the AFL
It is a NEW team, it is not the SANFL magpies FULL STOP !
They imposterised the PA name of the great SANFL team
It is PA in name not in credence
It was a smart ploy by the AFL to get a supPORTer base for the new franchise

PORT ADELAIDE POWER
Now been in the AFL for a decade
Made the finals about half of its existance
won a flag 2003
runner up in 2007, congratulations to Crows supPORTers on thier 3rd flag ....
and choking in some last qtrs this year, yes I agree
BUT
Thats a good exsistance for a new club
compare that to Fraudmantle who have been in longer

SUMMARY
It really depends why you hate PA is what counts
If the hatred is what they did in the SANFL thats piss poor and immature in my books
If the hatred stems from thier initial abortive backdoor entry into the AFL I can accept that

THE LAST WORD
It would be remiss of me not to have a crack as well for the fade outs
In Test cricket when the game finishes the players rush in to collect the stumps
At AAMI yesterday PA players should have run to the goal umpires and APPROPRIATELY collect what they signal scores with .....

The fade outs this season are a real concern no question

But you can't argue with PAP's record of making the finals and I think Williams has one of the best W-L records of any coach or team in the same period

+ Premiership in 2004 + making the GF last year

Just last week they did the opposite of choking and came from behind in Perth to win

So I agree with Mal - have a crack at the fade-outs (I personally hate the term choking) - but don't use the opportunity of a bad loss to launch personal attacks and make sweeping statements about the club's entire existence. If nothing else, it's completely disrespectful to a number of respected posters (including moderators) on this site. If that happened to my clubs I'd feel shite x 100 as we all would.

Port generate strong emotions either way and always will. But, geez, sometimes show up our ugly side. And, yes, some of their supporters dish it out just as badly but that criticism could be made at a % of any club's supporters.

As for a Bays supporters who never visits the AFL Board using this opportunity to start a thread, well ....

OK...here goes...
I actually like Port Power  , however I have a severe dislike for Chad Cornes, and IMO, I would
go as far as saying I would never want to see him in a Glenelg jumper and am glad that I wont.
All week listening to Cornesy (who I have time for, as he's down at the Bay regularly), and that bumbling
idiot KG (who hasn't seen a Westies game in ions, yet still speaks like he does), and the way KG kept saying
that Port would SMASH Carlton, and they are the best side out of the 8, made me wanna puke.
Seriously, if I barracked for Port, I'd be ringing this goose on Tuesday, and letting him have it. I know
I will be !

Port IMO evolved from the Maggies, a team I actually enjoy watching the Bays play whether at the Bay or Alberton,
I have respect for the Maggies as their record speaks for itself, and I cannot recall any big mouth idiots ala The Chad
shouting off about how good they are etc etc. They always let their on field stuff do the talking.

If it wasn't for The Chad, I'd probably go watch Port to get a fix of AFL, but severe dislkie of him, keeps me away...

Give me Port over the Crows anyday..

Also, I wasn't mouthed off to at all last night...What's happened to the Port passion ?

The question is why do the fade outs occur?

My own impression is that the team, or the coach, decide the lead is sufficient, and to relax and just defend that lead, then can't get the engine started again if the opposition gets a run on. To my observation, and from what I have picked up here and there, it appears the coach may have a very negative style that may contribute to this - minimise risk rather than attack the goals.

I freely admit my observations of the teams behaviour are based on inadequate evidence - just what I see on the occasional free-to-air TV broadcast, and on what I hear streamed via the AFL site.

Does anyone have anything more substantial?

Mal,
If they are not The Magpies why do they claim the history and the premierships. They will tell you that adinfinitum. Wake up and smell the roses. They deserve all they get. If you are 6-7 goals up you should put the foot down and win by 10-12. Port continually slow they game down in this area. The defensive mindset kicks in and they forget the style that put them in a winning position. The Maggies of old would bury sides both physically and on the scoreboard. Never give a sucker an even break was the motto and they took no prisoners. Hondo to bring up the freo game last week shows little footy knowlege there is only one team in the league who are more fragile than than the Power at the moment and that is Freo. melbourne revealed that a few weeks ago. Port are mentally shot at the moment. Freo are worse.

you can have a crack at me mal that is fine & your right in one sense of 'hating' port but i do in a sporting sense but you forget one thing & that is port supporters in general would say glenelg choked, got the wobbles etc etc when playing port in big games (fair call as the record says that) & the record also says that with 'afl port' these days & it isn't just 1 game, it has happened a few times recently

i'll add i believe port overachieved last year because i think they were a 'middle of the road side' who won most if not all their close games which got them higher on the ladder than they should've been & those close games this year are going the other way (it is probably evening out)

bayman = hates port=yes

I dont like it when Choko raves on about that as well
they are a decade old team
PA AFL should not boast about the SANFL exploits of the real PA and demean them in the process
Even Wedgie would agree with that

It's really warming the cockles of my heart :D

I thought it ironic that Chocko complained at his press conference of Carlton picking up Stevens for nothing. Funny, but I thought it was Chocko's club who "gave him away".

I would of given him away, he was one of the reasons Port couldn't win a prelim final, soft & not accountable & nothings changed.
He only got on top in the last qtr last night because of Ports inability to attack.
