I dont often post here because Im not a big fan of AFL and Im a Norwood supporter so I also hate Port Power but.......

Well done Mark Williams I admire your guts and agree with you 100%.
That decision is not about Shane Burgoyne but about the fabric of the game, it is a contact sport....a game for men and if they take that out of the game go watch basketball.
How dare these people change our game...people go to the football to see good hard physical clashes and if we lose that football is dead !

I was holding back on starting a topic about this as I figured it would only get turned into a Port fan having a whinge.I also think the topic had not been started as most punters on here and around the country would agree with Choco too.

3 weeks for that and Hall got 7 weeks for his,Burgoynes half (nearly) as bad? Inconsisitency is rife.

Whilst I enjoyed his sentiments he needs to think about his words a bit better, too suggest that a game turning into basketball or netball is a derogatory thing when a) basketball is a contact game with more constant contact than football and b) the Power sponsor a netball team and despite being classed a non contact game is an extremely physical game, his comments were insultive to basketball and netball.
Port really should get someone to write speeches for him, he has some good thoughts but has trouble communicating it.

With all due respects Wedgie in both basketball and netball contact is incidental, it is not permitted to tackle and grab your opponent or legally hip and shoulder them. You could argue the same with soccer and most sports.
Australian football is unique and the AFL insist on turning it into a soft antiseptic style of game I personally hate !
I dont condone filthy play and cowardly hits behind the play but good solid Garry MacIntosh/Leigh Mathews type football is what people want to see.
The best games are the hard tough games not the pretty boy style the AFL seem to want......thats why I prefer to watch SANFL football.

The fabric of the game went out the window when the AFL appointed Squibs like Adrian Anderson to run the biggest sporting competition in our nation. A successfull socceroos world cup and they're scared every single kid wants to play soccer so they make drastic and idiotic rule changes to keep mummy happy. Local Amateur footy for mine.

The current AFL managment seem hell bent on turning their version of Australian Rules Football into the Hybrid International Rules Game by attempting to remove as much physical contact as possible, so no wonder Williams is upset, I very much support what he had to say as well!

didnt rate how williams went about it at all- also thought 3 games was about the right verdict for burgoyne. He ran right past the ball in order to "shepherd" mitchell- whereby he hit him with severe force in the head- accidental or not thats 2 or 3 weeks in my book

BZZT wrong, Basketball is a contact sport. It is perfectly legal to screen ie hit a player off the ball, it is perfectly legal to run into a defender whos feet are in motion sideways when you have the ball and it is perfectly legal to run into a defender camped under the ring when attacking the hoop.
Basketball is a contact sport which legally permits body contact, it is far from incidental.
It seems Mark Williams isn't the only one ignorant on the rules of basketball.
And that doesnt even take into account the smaller confines and constant 'body banging'.*

Burgoyne was guilty.........no question.....

and even as a Port Supporter my feeling is deal with it..........and Choco needs to get over it and keep his mouth shut..................

he doesnt do himself of the club any favours.......

Good article by Rucci on page 72 of todays paper about it too. Must admit I was surprised it was Rucci that put it together.

football is heading in a strange direction- yes you may tackle a player, but incidental contact is being frowned upon.
Let's face it- the footy we know & love involved good hard hits of the body (Yates on Brereton, Milburn on Silvagni), & not the thuggery (Muir, Matthews, Rhys-Jones etc), yet the Laws of the Game Committee are intent cutting them from th same cloth & outlawing both, with harsh penalties.

I know, hence my point, completely different incidents that couldn't really be compared.
Milburn got games when he did what he did, if he did the same thing now he'd also get games hence making that case irrelevent to the old 'times are a changing' discussion.
But the Yates incident you point out is a relevent incident to disucss with the old 'times are a changing' discussion, hate to think of how many games he'd have got these days!
