New penalty for having extra men on the field

Postby westozfalcon » Fri May 16, 2008 7:37 pm

Can anyone please clarify for me what the newly introduced rules are in regard to having extra men on the ground?

If I got the gist of it seems there is now no more allowance for a team to have their score wiped out if they get caught with more than 18 on the field and instead a 'penalty' free kick is awarded from near point-blank range to the opposition.
Is this correct?

I was listening to Adrian Anderson on the radio the other night giving an explanation in his typical long-winded fashion but turned off in frustration. My head was spinning with the sheer verbosity of it. That bloke can never give a simple answer to a question when a complicated one will do!!!

I believe for once the AFL have got something right- this new rule makes a fair bit of sense.

Collingwood would of been penalised tonight I believe, listening to the radio they said when Josh Fraser came off at one stage Leon Davis shot out before he came off and the interchange steward hadn't lodged the slip confirming the swap.

Also a couple of times Collingwood only had 17 on for up to a minute while they lodged the required slip to let the replacement on.

Absolute fiasco, and the AFL must move quickly to rectify this stuff up before the next round. There will be 50 metre penalties awarded by overzealous officials for a player placing half a foot over the yellow line. As Nathan Buckley said, "How would you like to lose a Grand Final that way?".

Watching a stupid interchange steward grabbing players and not allowing then to take the field, even though there were only 17 men on the field is just proof to me that the game is getting more silly by the day.

It's a simple thing. One player comes off, one player goes on. God only knows why this couldn't be policed without filling in slips of paper and shuffling them around from person to person.

Whoever came up with this masterpiece must have worked in the public service at some time. The paperwork gives it away.

Whats wrong with the old rule?? The opposing teams captain is to call a count if he beleives there is more than 18 on the ground for the opposition. If there is more they have their current score automatically back to 0.0. However I would like to see a rule that if the opposition has 18 or less on the park at the time of the count they will be awarded a free kick on the offensive goal line.........That would stop reckless count calling I reckon....

Absolute joke this rule, how long have we had the interchange rule in vogue, bloody donkey years and how many times has it been breached, very very little, once again the AFL trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. FFS leave the bloody game alone, it has gone over 100 years without all this crap

talk about making rules up on the fly.... what a joke.

How can the clubs be so far out of touch with reality*

(* Adrian Anderson says the trial was a great success..... )

The game is confusing enough with whistles being blown for off the ball incidents, without an official somehow notifying the emergency umpire or boundary umpire that they have an extra player on field. Then the game will stop, they'll work out where the free should be taken, whether a 50 is involved... how confusing is that for everyone OTHER than the AFL who think it's great?!

Absolutely bizarre from the AFL.

One question, does the SANFL have to adopt this rule?

With all of these bits of paper being filled out everywhere, would hate to be the interchange steward who accidentally puts them down one day when a huge gust of wind sweeps through...the image of people frantically chasing slips of paper around while 7 players wait to be interchanged is an intriguing one.

I just read CK, they're using Post It notes.

Shares in post it notes might rise astronomically if the interchanges are still at 100 per team per gaem.

What if the interchange steward stuffs up his paperwork, will the club be fined?

I just cannot fathom how dumb this rule is, and how people are just effectively sitting back and accepting it - those in the AFL themselves I'm meaning. From what I'm reading, if someone exits the yellow box before the paperwork has been filled out, AND the steward hasn't said "yes you can go on" it's a free and 50. RIDICULOUS.

Did anyone see Caroline Wilson last night saying how well the rule worked, and that the clubs couldnt be happier with it? Then Archer told her that she just takes the opinion of the last person she spoke to!!!

With the advent of the new rules we have already seen a misinterpretation in week one of its application. Ryan Davis of West Coast only stepped over the yellow line and didn’t enter the field of play so the result should have been a fine to West Coast not a ‘penalty’ free kick to Adelaide.

This rule could become a huge problem. Just wait until a game is decided on the outcome of an interchange indiscretion. The aftermath will take on the proportions of ‘Sirengate’ in Launceston 2 years ago.

I think it would be a good move to allow teams to make interchanges only when a goal is scored. It will make the new rules slightly easier to police and also curtail the number of interchanges made during a game (a good thing in itself).

They just need 1 steward at each "gate" to ensure its 1 off, 1 on every time and that the "off" player is over the boundary before the "on" player . "On" player can't enter the field until the steward says so.

Without writing anything down. And film it all so if there's a dispute it can be checked out afterwards and a fine imposed if need be

Sounds so straight forward how has this got so hard :?

Cornesy reckons put a bar code on every player so they can "swipe" on and off

I'd like to clarify my earlier post:
I agree with the AFL updating an out-dated law of the game.
I disagree with the beauraeucratic measures they've brought in.
The players are also guilty of stupidity- how hard is it for a player to wait until his team mate "tags" him inside the box (off the field)? The way players enter the field, anyone would think they've had training with the Olympic baton-relay team...

why cant the AFL look at more of the big things in AFL instead of the little things look we have been playing the game for 150 yrs and if they had trouble with the interchange so much in any of those yrs they would of changed it look there was one time this yr where there has been 19 on the field who really gives a rats ass the clubs said that it was a mistake im sure that there is more things that the AFL can pick up on that really need fixing.. it is wrecking the GAME. AFL used to be good for Hard hits now if u hit someone hard your out for weeks even if you didnt mean it F*** common i would rather watch a game from 1980's than a grand final in todays era. it is poor and many people dont like it,

Make every Interchange a 50 metre penalty
it would stop the blatant absurd interchanges
and improve the game

12 INTERCHANGES PER TEAM A GAME SHOULD BE THE LIMIT
