Number #3 at Western Bulldogs...

Postby Rushby Hinds » Wed Nov 28, 2007 3:30 pm

The most famous number @ the Doggies has been granted to Andrejs (brother of) Everitt.

Awarded today by Chris Grant himself.

The kid's pride must be @ 100%.

Do other AFL clubs have "famous numbers" that are passed on through the decades to the future gun players?

(Ps for the unwashed, EJ Whitten was also number 3 @ the doggies)

Obviously he's someone whose parents love the club so much they named him after the oval they train at.

Buddy Franklin got Dermie's number 23 at the Hawks. Sam Mitchell has the honour of wearing the #5 made so famous by Peter Crimmins.

In the SANFL there would be no-one prouder than Luke "Barrie" Ivens running around in the number 10 for North Adelaide.

At Carlton Number 4 presented to Gibbs by Kernahan.
What they do also is the "low" numbers give to the good young kids
1 = Walker, 2 = Russel, 3 = Murphy, 4 = Gibbs etc
Kouta's number as far as I am aware is in retirement for a year.
Mark Austin (ex Glenelg) was given Braddles number...

How good is young Everitt? My word, one of the best youngsters I've ever seen.

West Coast retires the number for a year of any premiership player after he leaves the club, and then reactivates it.
Be interesting who the next give 3 to, since only Mainwaring and Judd have worn it in the club's history.

Sheedy was very big on awarding a jumper to a player he thought was similar to the guy he previously wore it. Put Hird in Daniher's jumper, Alessio in Madden's jumper, followed by Laycock.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.

Good point. Probably why Essendon flicked Sheeds -- for insulting Simon Madden's memory.

Chris Grant offers to coach juniors
29 November 2007 Herald Sun
Gareth Trickey

WESTERN Bulldogs great Chris Grant will offer his services to junior football next year as he contemplates a career as an AFL coach.

Grant said yesterday he planned to coach under-16, 17 and 18 football at the national level before re-assessing his AFL coaching ambitions in 12 months.

He also will make himself available to the Bulldogs as a casual development coach in 2008.

"Coaching is something, at this stage, I think I'd like to do, but I need some time-out to just chill-out a bit," Grant said.

"I really wanted some time away from the football club environment this year.

"I'm going to commit myself to home life and a little bit of part-time stuff with some junior teams.

"But as far as a role at the Bulldogs it won't be anything permanent, it will just be if you want me I'm available to work with some young kids."

Grant, who retired at the end of the season and is the club's games record holder, returned to Whitten Oval yesterday to pass on his coveted No. 3 guernsey to 2006 draftee Andrejs Everitt.

Everitt, who played eight games in his debut year, inherits the legacy of former bearers of the No. 3 guernsey including Bulldog legends Arthur Olliver and EJ Whitten.

Everitt's No. 29 jumper, worn by Grant during his first four seasons at the Dogs, will now go to 2007 draftee Easton Wood.

Grant said he selected Everitt as the next recipient of the No. 3 jumper because he was an "outstanding prospect."

"It wasn't about it being Chris Grant's number, to a large degree it was about being EJ's," Grant said.

"I'm really excited about it because not having someone there to give the number straight to would have meant that EJ and Arthur Olliver's number would have been kept in mothballs.

"I'm really rapt we've someone straight away who can wear the number and wear it with distinction."

Everitt said he was honoured to be chosen by Grant.

"Chris rang me on the Monday out of the blue and I wasn't really expecting anything like that but it's a pretty big honour," he said.

"It's a huge number but hopefully I can do the job and fulfil it."
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

Ah now I think I made your post look better Rod, don't even think Luke would put himself anywhere in the same class, worst decision ever by the NAFC, the guernsey should have been retired forever once the master gave the game away because quite simply, no-one could ever do it justice, bit like the same at Port with Ebert
