Re: AFL Fixture

Postby the joker » Fri Oct 26, 2007 11:27 am

this is the important part

ADELAIDE will make a strong return to the traditional Saturday afternoon football timeslot in 2008 following the release of next season’s AFL fixture.

The Crows open their campaign with a Sunday encounter against the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome, but return home the next week to host the Eagles in the first of eight Saturday afternoon matches.

That number is double the amount of games played in the same timeslot in 2007 and reflects a wider shift for Adelaide, which plays 14 day games next year, up from 10 in the season just finished.

The first Showdown clash with Port Adelaide is a home fixture for the Crows in round three in the Sunday twilight timeslot, their only twilight fixture for the year. The away Showdown will be a Sunday afternoon match in round 16.

Five matches at AAMI Stadium in the first eight rounds should provide a strong springboard for the Crows, who will also finish the home-and-away season at home in their return bout with the Dogs.

The Crows play in the highly sought-after Friday night timeslot just twice, both at home against Essendon and Geelong, but the national spotlight is intensified for the second encounter which will be one of only two matches played on the second weekend of the split round.

Adelaide has been granted three visits to the MCG to play Carlton (round six), Richmond (round 11) and Collingwood (round 15). Their remaining three matches in Victoria are at Telstra Dome.

The Crows return to Aurora Stadium in Launceston to play the Hawks in round four and will also make trips to Subiaco (West Coast), the Gabba (Brisbane) and the SCG (Sydney).

Four of the seven opponents that Adelaide will play twice did not play finals in 2007.

Adelaide’s fixture for 2008
1 Sunday, March 23, v Western Bulldogs, Telstra Dome, 1:10 pm

2 Saturday, March 29, v West Coast, AAMI Stadium, 2:40 pm

Split round in round 14 - seems later than usual from memory.

Can't believe Essendon are away in the first 2 rounds. Disgrace!

That's because there is also a week with no games after round 7 (all because Easter is so early)

Didn't spot that! Thanks, makes sense now - 2 breaks makes them "one-third season breaks".

I just flicked through it Hawthorn play Carlton once- in round 22??!! WTF??

Also play Melbourne in Round 1, and then in round 9.

This looks more like a SANFL draw....

Collingwood should get off to a hammering start next season. I counted 5 out of the first 6 at the MCG.

They mentioned in the paper this morning that they're moving away from the approach of each club playing every other in the first 15 rounds. Apparently this new approach minimises the likelihood of clubs having to play consecutive away games.

Its not as bad as last year

I counted 14 games at the G

They seem to be travelling more and they don't finish with a run at the G in the last 4 rounds like they did last season

Have a look at how many games Collingwood get at the MCG.

Seriously though, why would you chuck them somewhere else and risk missing out on $$ for ticket sales? They draw massive crowds most weeks, stupid people wouldn't capitalise on that.

There may be some flaws in the fixture, but that isn't one of them.

Great draw for the Cats as we don't play one side that came above us in 2007.

[quoteThey mentioned in the paper this morning that they're moving away from the approach of each club playing every other in the first 15 rounds. Apparently this new approach minimises the likelihood of clubs having to play consecutive away games.[/quote]

From the AFL media release:
As key developments of this year's fixture, Mr McLachlan said the AFL had introduced two bye weekends for all clubs -- over the Mother's Day weekend in May and the split round over round 14; scheduled five games on the Saturday of Round 22 to enable greater flexibility in fixturing for week one of the finals and dispensed with the requirement that all teams play each other once by the end of round 15, enabling a reduction in consecutive travel loads for clubs and an even spread of both home and away matches for all clubs through the season.
With the removal of the previous requirement that every club plays the other 15 teams by the end of round 15, Mr McLachlan said the absence of this constraint had meant that no club in the competition would have back-to-back travel for away games involving a match at Subiaco, and the number of back-to-back interstate trips for all clubs across the competition had been reduced dramatically from 12 to only five occurrences. The five back-to-back interstate travel commitments for clubs in the 2008 season is the lowest since Fremantle joined the competition in 1995.
Roger Woodcock -- 602 goals from a forward flank makes you a legend.
