The Draft 2008

Postby Blue Boy » Sun Oct 14, 2007 1:22 pm

Now that the trade period has come and gone it is now time to focus on the draft.

Im really hoping the that the crows go for midfielders first then followed by KPP players. We really seem to struggle when picking big guys from interstate so maybe we should stay with local talent on that front.
It is what it is !!!

What about your lad, John McDonald. Looks to me like an excellent prospect. Might not be a terrific athlete but looks like a classy midfielder.

An exciting prospect from Perth is David Gourdis.

He is KPP, Ran the 20m sprint in the same time as Nathan Krakour did (Quickest at the camp) 6th in the repeated 30m sprints, Highest vertical leap at the camp.

Was probably going to go at 15-25 but these draft camp results may nudge him up the order a bit. Would be a great pick up.

Even with it being a shallow draft there is still some really good players in the top 20.

Kreuzer will go number 1 because of what Carlton need (Ruckmen) but IMO the best player in the draft is Trent Cotchin, brilliant kick on both feet and should turn into an elite midfielder.

Others that will be pushing for top 10-20 will be Cale Morton (Pick 2 IMO), Chris Masten (Has OP but will still go early, Inside Midfielder) Ben McEvoy is a KPP and probably the best prospect at CHF, Rhys Palmer- Another Perth boy that Freo or WCE would love to get, midfielder who has a great work ethic, a cocky confidence and loves kicking goals. Alex Rance- I expect him to slip a bit unless Melbourne pick him with pick 4, big defender who has a big future.

Brad Ebert (Most know more about him on here than me anyway but will go top 10 IMO. Lachie Henderson (Ruckmen that will be highly sought after)

David Myers is one i really rate and personally i hope he slips to 13 so WCE can grab him, he is a half back/midfielder, has leadership qualities and IMO should go top 10 but hope he doesnt. Once he develops expect an upgraded version of Andrew Mackie,

After these it gets hard, There is Selwood (Top 20), Grimes, Pears, Bellchambers (Pure tap ruckmen) Cyril Rioli, Maric and co.

Dont know much about the SA boys anyone got any Info?

Really like the look Rhys Palmer. If he is there by the 10th pick I'll be going insane. But I highly doubt he'll still be there; expect Freo to draft him.

From the footage I've seen of McEvoy he appears to have an awkward kicking style? If so that will work against him.

Pardon, but reid and his mates must look outside the square

Have a good look at last years draft, crows went local and power went the interstate lads

The Power ended up miles in front and that should be a lesson to he crows, other than Tippett & David McKay who else came from interstate????port by memory supplied the other 9 players in the local draft they grabbed from over the borders

For starters
Reece Archard (Sth Adel)
Turner (South)'
Greg Gallman (Norths)
Andrew McIntyre (Norths)
Nick Gill (Norths)

Yeah i dont think Freo will let Palmer get past them, i think he actually goes for Freo as well.

If David Myers is still there at 10 you would be crazy not to take him. Will Adelaide be looking for a KPP or a mid with their first pick in your opinion? Or just best player available.

Of the 6 juniors Port drafted (excluding Rodan), 2 were from SA (Paul Stewart and Westhoff) and only 2 played regularly in the senior side (Boak and Westhoff). The jury is still out on the rest at this early stage.

So I can't accept the link you are making between the 2007 results and the 2006 draft. Port's 2007 great results were driven by a range of factors but their 2006 draft picks were a smaller part - with the exception of Westhoff who (funnily enough) is a South Australian!

I also can't accept your statement that drafting interstate players is the answer given all home-sickness issues all AFL clubs suffer from. Don't you rate any SA lads?

IMO we'll be taking a mid first, we need a mid with pace and good disposal.

I'm on the same page as Blue-Boy

I'd like to see quality midfielders targeted and don't use pick 10 on a ruckman! We need some skill and run through our mid-field IMO. Midfielders seem a safer option as most top 10's are almost ready to play senior footy whereas the talls need a couple more years.

We have a number of young talls on our list (Tippett, Moran, Walker, Sellar, Griffin) who should be developing into some KPP roles in the next year or so so maybe later picks can go on a KPP.

I think the kid will be a star - has alot of Marty Mattner about him when in full flight. I rekon he has got a bit of pace about him from what I have seen !!!

Big players take longer. sellar could be better than gibbs still. sellar would have played 15 games if he was at carlton and wasent injured this year

Strongly disagree that Sellar would have played 15 games for Carlton this year. He was dropped on quite a few occasions back to Glenelg's Reserves and wasn't an absolute stand out there. Attitude and lack of intensity are areas he will need to work on if hes to make it at AFL level.

Come back to us in 2 years time

Debating about last year's draft picks is speculation/opinion at this stage lets see them strut their stuff in the next 2 seasons .....

While we are waiting, explain to us again why excluding SA lads from drafting is the way the Crows should go .... :?

He couldn't play in the A's consistently in the SANFL, long way off AFL...

Agree, it is too early to judge last years draft selections, on Westhoff, he had a great first year, however, he needs to put some Kg's on his light frame, or he risks a short career at afl level, as his body will suffer

we also need to accept, big guys generally take 2-3 years longer to develop

I would like to see the crows target a quality midfield player with it's first round selection

He only pinched hit in the ruck. Played forward for 75% of the time including the ressies...
Will need a big pre-season to get fit, and force his way into the league side. Has talent but last year was one to forget for him...
