Saints make another raid

Postby Rik E Boy » Fri Oct 12, 2007 1:20 pm

Charlie Gardiner and Steven King were traded to St Kilda for pick 90!

Not that happy with losing King. We get his body right and then give him away from nothing. Good pick up by the Saints who have been very active during the trading period.

Maybe 66 will have to jump back on.

Sure you've got salary cap issues, sure you don't really need those two guys, but why PICK 90?

Pick 90 is the 'Well, I suppose he is just a bee's d**k better than nothing...' pick. St. Kilda now have a decent, yet aging ruckman, and a potentially capable FF. Good luck to them.

Salary Cap - has to be.

Funny, chose King over Blake in the GF.. yet are ecstatic that Blake re-signs and happy to trade King for pick 10000.

to get players you have to trade something, therefore pick 90 it is, they probably wont even use it however it was mearly a tool to allow this to occur otherwise they would have had to wait until the PSD...why not get it done now so all parties can move on, no doubt it sounds like Geelong needed to create some room in their cap and this was the only way to do it.....Saints while they have a couple of champs it drops away pretty quickly so I reckon their cap would be OK, Harvey on the veterans list and no Thompson or Gerhig would free up $$$ also

I've had a bit of a think about this. Geelong are going to secure Adam Donahue (Father/Son) and have moved on four players to promote some players from the VFL team as well as ease salary cap pressure. The club were probably hoping to retain King but had their hands forced by the Saints who made a large offer to Blake.

Blake had to be retained after the season he has had and the Cats secured the future of the ruck division by giving Trent West a two year deal. At the same time we have held on to Prismal and Tenace as well and have gotten rid of talented but not needed Callan and deadwood Gardiner and Playfair.

The whole idea is to prevent what happened to Essendon after it's 2000 flag from happening to Geelong. I have trust in the recruitment team but still not happy about losing King for bubkus but you can't have your King and eat it too! Even without the King, we will still rule.

I understand what you are saying hondo. Pick 90 is ridiculously low for King and Gardiner but the fact King is a premiership player shouldn't automatically increase his value. Would Aaron Keating have been worth more than pick 90?

Only Port Adelaide would be able to get a decent player with pick 90

Geelong helping out two players get where they want.
Both would have been in the PSD I feel...

It's not "Here's two players, they are worth XX, so give us that". It's just the system.
