What was going on with the distinct lack of fans at the Cows showdown on the weekend?

For far too long, the anti-Port movement (spearheaded by Cows fans) has taken great pride and joy in slating the Power and its fans for poor attendances. Yet on Saturday, when your club needed you most, you Cows fans stayed away in your droves. On a day when regardless of league positions or form, either side has a near 50/50 chance of getting one up over their closest rivals, you don't bother turning up.

A packed house of screaming Cows fans might have been enough to lift Adelaide over the line in the last quarter. Instead, the fans that were there left en masse after Robbie Gray's first fourth quarter goal to turn things around.

40,000 fans at a Cows home-game showdown? I mean what is going on? To make matters worse, looking at the ground at the end of the game, there was a LOT of black white and teal. Heck, Port should have asked for the sponsorship seat coverings over the usual 4 bays to help Adelaide look like they'd drawn a decent crowd.

Poor Cows. Everybody's figured out that it's no longer fashionable to be an Adelaide fan.

My heart bleeds.

Who is this COWS team you are talking about. No wonderr there was no crowd there. Neve heard of them.

There were only 100 public sale tickets left on Friday apparently

So 10,000 season ticket holders and SANFL members haven't turned up
In between signatures .....

What the AFL either has not realised or wont accept is that

1) South Australia had a triving football culture and tradition for 120 years BEFORE the Crows arrived.

2) The traditional time for SANFL / Country / Suburban footy has always been Saturday afternoon, we used to watch the VFL replays / Swans games on a Sunday afternoon.

3) Unlike any other state South Australians have maintained a degree of duo support of an AFL side and a local one. (as shown in strong SANFL crowds, esp Grand Finals).

4) Scheduling AFL showdowns on a Saturday afternoon counteracts all of this and leads to a LOSE / LOSE / LOSE situation.
ie only 75 off lowest Crows showdown crowd / Alberton crowd of 1700 possibily the lowest in recorded historty / bet there were less people at country / suburban games as well.

5) Showdowns should be scheduled at a different time than Saturday afternoons.

Great post mate.

Despite all my stupidity earlier in this thread, the bottom line is that scheduling a Showdown on a Saturday afternoon is madness.

As per an earlier post, many of us will have to chose between our local league (playing or watching kids), our SANFL club or going to the AFL.

If the Vic's love Saturday afternoon footy so much, then by all means go bananas on it over there. We're more than happy with Friday night, Saturday night or Sunday arvo thanks.

Spot on PhilH.

The Crows have a huge country membership and Sat arvo sport in the country is big.

It's also fair to say that the Power has "lucked in" with the draw this season, courtesy of the AFL:

The Power got Round 1 at home - (Season Opener)
The Crows got Round 2 - EASTER.
The Crows got Round 7 - on Mothers Day. The Power have complained about this day in the past when it has had games scheduled on Mothers Day.
Also, who could forget that due to the Power's woes, all SANFL season ticket holders have had to pay a $30 levy to get a ticket to a AFL game.
Steve Bradbury and Michael Milton. Aussie Legends.

There has already been one Saturday afternoon showdown before the one gone; that also had a poor crowd. I expected nothing less this time. Don't worry; the TV dollars are worth more to the AFL than a few thousand off the showdown crowd.
