Talk on the national game

Kane Cornes

Do you agree or disagree with Chris McDermott that Kane Cornes might find himself positionless this season.

It may be a harsh call from McDermott but if Kane Cornes isnt tagging where will he fit into the scheme of things? His skills arent the greatest but if as has been touted he plays a forward role, he could realistically tag an oppositions running back while using his smarts to steal a goal or break a zone with his 25m chip kicks.
Personally i think his time in the Port guernsey may be coming to a close if he doesnt prove a very valuable forward. He has a big motor but isnt fast, skills are a worry, however he has the smarts and experience to pinch a goal or two.

Auto's diagnosis is one more year and then he'll be seriously fighting for his spot.

With Dom Cassisi playing the same role as Kayne of late & doing a very good job, i'm in support of McDermott's statement.
Theres no room for 2 taggers in todays footy, especially if those players havn't another string to their bow.

Not convinced Cassisi and Kane play the same roles....Kane is an out and out tagger who picks up cheap kicks around the back of zones, while Cassisi hunts the ball and is the one who gets manned up on when in a pack situation. Think Cassisi has progressed from hunter to the hunted.

Yes he ( Cassisi ) is, he's also alot tougher at the contest, player & ball. A great tagger with more strings to his bow.

Might be a tough year for Kane. Dom is our #1 run with player but he will need to be rested during games, no one bloke can run with a Judd/Ablett all day so Kane will need to make his way in the middle at times. But can he just sit on the bench waiting for that chance?

Good point Booney. But I for one am a big fan of Kane Cornes. He tries hard every week and has the rare abilty to take the games best out of the contest for long periods of time, true he does pick up cheap kicks but their are a few players around that do it and do it well. I reckon the key for Kane is to become more attacking and playing in the forward line during the NAB cup might help him do this

You know, the funny thing about McDermott's article is he was the turnover king of the AFL before Kane took the mantle.

Still reckon we are better off without Kane unless he is close to our goals - at least that way if it gets turned over, it is not going into our back half as it does when he is around the midfield..........

I thought Kane played very well yesterday.

Got plenty of the ball and generally did something with it.

He was a man on a mission yesterday. Hopefully we see him play like that every week.

Good call DA .. You always rate a player when he performs whilst the critics are circling for him.

I've been critical of him before (and still am of his brother), but he put in an excellent game yesterday.

A few turnovers yesterday but he was outstanding in the wet. Head over it and hunting, laying several good tackles too.

Yeah, I'll even put my hand up as one who has bagged him. I thought he was close to done at AFL level. But on yesterday's performance, he can stick around for a while yet!
