Port Power Assistant Coaches

The intent of this thread is not designed to have a shot at the power, more so I was interested in people's view on ex players moving straight in to a coaching role at the club they played for

Last year Port appointed Primus as a full time assistant and I believe Kingsley has also been appointed for a full time role for 2007

The benefit is they know the structure, culture and players personalities, ego's etc

But the negative, do they bring anything new to the club, fresh idea's, a fresh pair of eyes, a completely unbias opinion

My thoughts have always been you need to step away and experience a different environment before you take up a role at the club you played for, I'm interested in other people's thoughts

I'm not sure want the intention is. It could be any number of reasons why we have retired players as coaches.

Could be because we can't get any prefered options. Could be because these players want to coach. Could be the club wants them to coach. Who knows, could be anything. I don't have an issue with it, as the player turned coach already has a good/great relationship with the playing group, thus a better enviroment to play in.

Could be anything.

All part of the us vs them attitude i think and it has worked for them previously. No different to the crows wanting to have ben hart as an assistant?

actually very different, if Ben takes the job he will not be a Match day assistant, he will look after the development of the young kids in the SANFL in partnership with Stewy

Making the transition from player to assistant coach within a club as soon as you retire reflects on the persons knowledge of the game as displayed to the current board/coaching staff.Obviously Primus and Kingsley both showed good leadership skills on the field in their playing days,and in the meeting room for match day planning senior players have a lot to say about the opposition and the structure they wish to employ,after all,they are the ones out there carrying out the tactics.Kingsley was a great back line 'marshall' and will/should make the transition easily.

I think there is an advantage of moving from playing to coaching in the same club as players still on the list will have respect for the person in question,and should be able to relate and understand the way they intend for the team to play in a better manner.

Inbred wharfies..nothing like the cosmopolitan social scene down at Geelong BTW, Booney....there appears to be some talk about Peter going on the Rhode to Catland. Not sure how I feel about that. On one hand he did a lousy job at the Bullfrogs but on the other, he did succeed where Neil Craig failed at the Redlegs. Probably post season scuttlebutt in any event.
