Bulldogs 2010 - Experienced enough, but not big enough?

Postby Rik E Boy » Fri Oct 09, 2009 10:38 am

Many feel that the Western Bulldogs have added the missing piece of the jigsaw with the recruitment of Barry Hall. I think it is fair to say that Hall will add value but a closer look at the Doggie forward line shows more than a few ageing warriors out there.

Akermanis, Johnson and Hall all have thier best football behind them and Eagleton appears to have been around forever as well. I reckon the Bulldogs have the experience but perhaps not the body strength of sides like St Kilda and Geelong and this might be the other reason (besides a lack of tall marking forwards) that they have fallen short in recent years.

Despite recruiting Hall, I reckon they might only get to the Prelim once again next year.

regards,

I agree Reberta, I don't think BBBB is going to be their saviour, but who knows.

What was the deal with Ayce Cordy this year, after injury did he end up playing much footy?

Dont think he played much at all.
Will be handy to get him up and running. Use Him and Hudson in the ruck and allow Minson to push forward, the big fella can take and grab and when hes on hes not bad at all.

my initial thought was that if we didn't pick up an established power forward was to look at using Minno as that player. he can definatley take a pack mark and he is a big strong boy. if we played him alongside Hall in the pocket then that could work well... our forward line could look like...

FB: Johnson, Hall, Minson
HB: Akermanis, Hahn, Murphy

which is pretty handy, a bit of size with the crumbing capacity, not to mention our midfield which is where many of our scoring comes from...

C: Cross, Cooney, Ward
Foll: Hudson, Griffin, Boyd

They realise their window is closing and are going all out for 2010 and barring injuries I reckon they'll give it a real shake.
They scared me more than St Kilda this year and I was only confident we'd win the flag when they got knocked out. I also think Geelong had a big advantage over the top team playing the bulldogs in a double chance final and not a knockout.

Agree Wedgie, Hall has signed for two years but Johnson and Aka are no certainty or at least unlikely to go around in 2011 and while they have a great bunch of kids it's hard to see them winning a flag without those blokes in the short term.

That would have to be the slowest forward line in the league structured like that? Hill will come back in there to add some bite. Hall & Minson both deep, don't think so....

Shauan Higgins will also spend a fair bit of time in the forward line to add pace, future gun IMHO.

Interesting interview with James Fantasia (their football manager) who said they are so tight on their salary cap that there's a chance one or both of Eagleton & Akermanis may have to be delisted if they don't take big pay cuts.

Aker might have to take a 50% pay cut to keep going apparently.

Different type of players mate.
Hall is a lead up forward type, Minson is the pack marker.
Add in Higgens, Hill and aker and you think that is slow?

Higgins isnt all that quick. Great player though.

They really need someone like Jarrad Grant to come on and make a name for himself. How much Hall will help is really up in the air.

How many matches will pass before Barry socks someone and gets rubbed out - any predictions?
I think he'll try hard to be on his best behaviour and last about 12.

With Higgins & Hill no, but they weren't in the forward set up I commented on. You will note I added Hill myself.....

the forward line i mentioned come to think of it is slow, but the midfielders that push up into our forward line add the pace, with them changing onto the flanks and pos Minno not being there all the time replaced by Hill then it changes... and look at where our goals came from this year, an even spread with midfielders figuring nicely... Aker 39, Johno 33, Hill 32, Hahn 32, Higgins 27, Gilbee 22, Gia 20, then Ward, Cooney, Minson, Griffin, Boyd and Eagleton in the teens... Hall will just add a focus to go to at the top of the square that we haven't had and also mean that Johno's not going to have the number 1 defender anymore...

and maybe bazz can teach minno a thing or two and then when it's his time to go we'll have a ready replacement...

I'd expect Johnson to be putting through 50+ goals next year, now that Hall will be drawing the best defender.
