Port and AAMI

Seriously though, what do people think?

IMO it would be bloody awesome to play at RADelaide Oval, but NOT going to happen. Redeveloping Alberton would be amazing, but not at the expense of the stands already there, which are NOT up to the pretty boy standards of the (G)A(Y)FL. And where's the coin going to come from?

Port will continue at AAMI, but racking up losses isn't going to help anyone. So not sure what the answer is really .

how about winning some games to start with... then not having your coach call the season off just after half way through (sorry to lazy to look up the exact round).....do these 2 things then that will be a start

A single club supporter base was never going to work - especially with a club supporters of other SANFL teams were never going to relate to.
Emphasising the connection to the old Maggies after the creation of the "Power" didn't help either.

I tend to support Port against other AFL teams than the Crows, but that is only SA nostalgia and some sympathy for my wife's family connections.
It wouldn't have happened if we had stayed in SA...

Yes I wondered similar DW - especially when Greg Boulton said in the same article that leaving AAMI was completely out of the question

It sounded like James was continuing a debate he had with the Board when he was at the Power ..... now he's gone he feels free to push the wheel-barrow publicly.

To me, going to a smaller stadium = holding up the white flag on the crowds issue. I went to the game v Brisbane round 22 2002 (or 2003?) v Brisbane when there was around 40,000 people and it was a great day to be at the footy.

maybe there could be calls to build a stadium in the city ... for both port and adelaide utd.... guarnteed income winter and summer ...but also they could charge a small fee for car parking during work days.. also with the corporate boxes could they double up as small offices for businesses etc

Leave the Crows out at the Swamp.

I went to that game Hondo. Great day, great crowd, unreal atmosphere.
Can't recall to many other Power games I've been to with that sort of crowd though.

I thought this was just a ploy to get the SANFL to charge the Power less than the Crows to use AAMI.
They possibly want the SANFL clubs to subsidise them rather than vice versa.

it's clear that Aami isn't financially viable. i think they should give Adelaide Oval a go, even if it is for the 2009 NAB cup games and possible look at a perminate move in 2010.

That's the solution that everyone except the SANFL would like. The SACA wouldn't compensate the SANFL enough to make it happen.

It is suggested that to break even the SANFL need a crowd of 27 000 at a match at Football Park, currently the average non blockbuster match at Football Park as a Port Adelaide home game is running around 23 000.

All clubs have their "bandwagoners" and no doubt the minute Port hit form once again a number of the termites will crawl back to watch the club play raising the crowd figures by natural attrition to the required number. Still whilst that isnt happening its important to realise that the club is actually running at a loss and action does need to be taken to improve that situation both for the Port Adelaide club and the owner of its license the SANFL. If Port make a loss and dont bring in the $$$ ultimatley it is the SANFL and its 9 clubs that suffer as a result of it.

The ultimate suggestion would be for Port Adelaide to purchase one of the various hotels in the city and set it up as a city based club / players bar etc and at the same time organise for matches such as ones against sides that traditionally draw the lower crowds to be played at Adelaide Oval. I feel that is the only real way for Port to connect with the South Australian Public of whom a high % specifically dont like the club because of their heritage as the Port Adelaide Magpies and the fact that the Power are often the subject of the nastiest derogatory jokes etc and as a result "neutral" supporters tend to be encouraged away from the club as a result.

Its time the SANFL got past their previous problems with the SACA and worked some things out and consdiering the number of SANFL finals played there, maybe they already are some way towards that anyway!

The alternative is that Port begin to look into selling home games to the Gold Coast or Tasmania so that the club gets a garanteed return for matches. Sadly because of the current attitude of the SANFL towards the SACA, this is probably the most likely outcome which is a two edged sword because to do so will activley work against promoting the club in S.A with long term success as the Adelade Oval plan would.

I am a Crows supporter but will not go to watch them at AAMI st because I'm sick and tired off getting there a hour and a half before the game so you don't have to catch a cab to get to the ground and then waiting 30mins to get out of your car park. Last year I went to watch at least 6 Power home games and 1 Crows.
