The Finals System

Postby Rik E Boy » Mon Sep 15, 2008 1:13 pm

It has been a dud finals series so far to some extent but at least it is an equitable one. Have a Captain Cook at the NRL....

8th ranked NZ Warriors defeated 1st ranked Melbourne Storm and then gets a home semi final against the 4th ranked Sydney Roosters.

If the Storm had won the 4th ranked Sydney Roosters (who lost) would have got a home final against 3rd ranked Cronulla Sharks.

5th ranked Brisbane Broncos get a home final against 1st ranked Melbourne Storm!

Honestly, what a joke.

It sounds like how the AFL's first final 8 system worked

One of the principles seemed to be that if you burned your double chance game, you lost your right to home finals (at least in week 2)

Altho back then the integrity was further compromised with both prelims having to be played at the MCG

So at this point I'll cue Wedgie for discussion about how the 4th placed Crows got to play at home v 2nd ranked Geelong in week 2 of the 1997 finals :D

I'll be interested in Wedgie's view of that one, but I assume the AFL administration at the time saw neither of them as real Melbourne teams and therefore didn't want them around. They've sort of adopted Geelong now, but I bet the media will still favour whoever opposes Geelong in the GF this year since it will be a "true" Melbourne team.

Saw that, what a joke. Surely there's need to be a structure in place so teams know their path through the finals before they start. NRL's is horrible and unfair to the top 4, espcially if they lose the first week. For Melbourne to finish top and only get one home final is complete crap. Not that I care this year, as my Cowboys weren't exactly close...

The AFLs system shits on the NRL. Just like the state of the game in general I suppose.

Yep the Saints and the Bullies are the "Melbourne" teams this year. Hawthorn is a bit too eastern suburbs to be the most popular.

Its the exact same final 8 system the afl used to have, until the crows won two flags under it and some people got a bit annoyed. If your interested in the rugby league fraternities point of view on the subject, have a look at last thursdays nights NRL footy show. Some strong support for the NRL to adopt the AFL's current model. Ironically the NRL introduced the mcintyre final 8 at about the same time the AFL scrapped it due to its inequalities. Up until last sunday, no team in 8th had ever beaten the minor premiers and as such it never has caused a problem until now. At least the warriors game at Mt. Smart stadium sold out in 11 minutes, good luck to them and a good reward for beating a team that was considered unbeatable in melbourne.

The Crows didn't win 2 premierships because of that system AND the system wasn't changed just because of the Crows.

Winning 5 interstate finals in 2 years had a bit more to do with it (including 3 on the trot in 1998).

The only query is the Geelong game however you could argue why should the 4th team that wins their first final give up home ground advantage to the 2nd team that lost their first final. You could argue either way however all we would prove is that the old final 8 system was flawed.

However, in 1997 we then had to beat the 3rd and 1st ranked teams in Melbourne to win the flag so that's hardly giving it to us on a platter.

This "lucky Crows premierships" is a repeating myth that disappears once the 5 interstate finals wins are brought up .... did I say it enough , that's 5 interstate finals wins in 2 seasons

Fair point, but please don't count grand finals as "interstate finals". Ticketing arrangements and the modern football calendar combine to ensure neither side has any home ground advantage on the last day in September.

Two words ...

FINAL FIVE!

An advantage for the top team, a reward for the second and third teams and a clear absence of rafters in sixth, seventh and eighth who usually barely scrape in with a 50% win record.

There is no logical system for a Six, Eight ... or Vlad's "Top Ten" ... what utter bollocks that is!

Then again it's all about flashing the cash now, but if only logic won out for once at AFL House.
