Power & PAM.

Postby Psyber » Wed Jul 30, 2008 3:44 pm

I apologise if this has been looked at before - if so please refer me to the thread.
I hesitated whether to post it here, or under "Ask Spelly", but it is not a pure SANFL question.

Three questions: Does anyone know?
1. What percentage of Power members are still or are former Port Adelaide Magpies members?
2. What percentage of Power supporters are still or are former Port Adelaide Magpies supporters?
3. Did PAM membership drop, and by how much, when the Power was formed to enter the AFL?

From my knowledge and experience:

1: If the Power have 30,000 members, and the Magpies have 4000(both around the mark give or take a few hundred),I would think 3-3500 of the Magpie members would be Power members also.

2:If the Magpies have (lets loosly term) 15-20,000 "supporters" (yes,I know, nowhere near that many go to Magpie games, but this is {IMO} the amount of Adelaidiens who would say the 'Magpies' when asked who they follow ) then I would suggest of those 15-20,000 maybe, and I say maybe 13-18,000 of those now also "support" the Power.

3:Not really (Spelly can provide 97 Magpie memberships and 08,cant you Spelly?).From memory, since 97 the Magpie membership has been one of the top few in the league, now,as numbers go this may have dropped but as far as %age of the SANFL Mermbership base goes it would be a similar figure.

Keep in mind my learned friend, this is only based on the knowledge I hold of both the Power and Magpie membership/supporter bases and in no way can be used to provide statistics to Big Brother.....

I can't do that, sorry. :( ;). The club would have them, though.

Thanks guys. I was curious about the effect of a club based AFL licence on the original club, in contrast with the effect of the Crows as a composite side.
I had assumed most PAM supporters would also support the Power, but wondered how many left the old club behind.

What about literacy rates, life expenctancy and rates of incarceration? From my knowledge and experience it would be LOW, SHORT and HIGH. More importantly, will Prime Minister Rudd come out and apologise for the Bogan Generation and do something about bridging the gap?

I would not think that many Power members (and to some extent 'supporters' although not the same %age) would have 'left the old club behind'.

Sure, some who chose to go to the Power games and be members may not be able to due to cost, the Mrs or any other reason attend the Magpie games as well.

I also know many Port Magpie fans who follow other AFL clubs.I know of Essendon,(obviously) Collingwood,North Melbourne,Brisbane and West Coast and all of those people hate the Power.....really hate it.

The issue is that a number of Magpies supporters also went for Collingwood in the VFL and this was reciprocated by the Collingwood Cheer Squad attending Port Magpies games to lend their support to the club. I still know several Port people who did not make the change across to the Power.

The stat that I find interesting is that it seems to me that an unusually high number of Sturt Supporters that I know go for the Power as opposed to the Crows which when you consider that the Power is the continuation of the Port Magpies seems like a mix of Water and Oil!!!

Yeah its amazing how Port's AFL following has developed, with quite a few traditional Port (SANFL) supporters following the Crows or another AFL club, and supporters of some of Port's rival clubs, such as Norwood, and Sturt in particular, following the PAFC in the AFL. I guess the amount of Sturt based players on Port's squad over the last 5 or so years may have contributed to that.

Yes, presumably with time the Power will be less identified with the Magpies and thus be more acceptable to other SANFL supporters as an AFL team and they will come over with players from their clubs. Even I, as a Norwood supporter, tend to support the Power against anyone but the Crows, as that separation increases.

Also I know a few blokes and they go to watch them not so much for the Power, but more so to see other teams, as your guaranteed to get a seat when Port play. If you want a dose of AFL footy and couldn't give a 5hit who you see then the Power are a good choice...
