FX vs Umpires

Postby pipers » Sun Jul 27, 2008 9:21 pm

I don't often post on this board, so make the most of it...

I watched the Geelong/Hawks game on Friday night (and I don't often watch AFL either).

87,000 fans in attendance. But you wouldn't have known it from the TV coverage...

Instead of two sets of passionate supporters going ape, all I heard was sheepishly feeble comments from the umpires going on about "Cameron Mooney, abuse" and "Yes, good tackle Jimmy, but he didn't have a chance".

How about turning up the FX mikes, and turning the umps down (or better still, OFF!)

Just another reason why the AFL is getting worse every week...

I agree. I'm not the least bit interested in the umpires' comments. I'm one of those people who try to pretend umpires don't exist. Good umpires are invisible, so you shouldn't be able to hear them either.

Yeah that annoys the crap out of me. One of the calls I hate the most is "knock it out! knock it out!". Why does the umpire have to tell the footy player what to do? If the player did the same, chances are there would be a free against him. Also, sometimes there are 6 blokes on the ball and there is no chance of it coming out, how irritating.

Agreed Fatal.

If we want them in the game, mike them up, but we don't so turn their mikes off, make them complimentary aspects of the game as they should be and we wont have morons like Ray Chamberlain, Justin Schmitt and the like trying to get their melon's on TV for inconsequential bulldust.

Also agree Fatal

If miking up the Umps is impacting the crowd FX, then don't mike them

If it's not to do with the umps being wired up - then fix the equipment

Personally - I don't want to hear the umpires, and I miss the crowd noise sometimes it sounds like only 10 people are there ... especially on Fox as someone else said

I like hearing the players curse :D

But seriously, it's putting the umpires on a pedestal, which filters right down to amateur footy, where they think they are the centre of the game. A good umpire should be hardly noticed.
