Imparja dumps Ten
FOOTY fans will miss out on half of the free-to-air telecasts of AFL matches under planned changes to Imparja television programming.
And every second grand final telecast is in doubt, at least until 2011 when an existing deal ends.
The Alice Springs based station plans to drop Channel Ten from its programming from Sunday, when it will also drop its nightly local news service.
It will broadcast only Channel Nine programs, a weekly local current affairs program, plus ten one-minute updates of local news daily.
All programs will run to Eastern Standard times instead of Central Standard.
AFL fans will be hit the hardest, losing half of the season’s free-to-air coverage.
Under a rotational agreement with Ten and Seven, the grand final will be shown in Alice Springs this year. But the networks would not say whether the final will be shown in Alice in the coming years.
Imparja chief executive Alistair Feehan said the change was justified because 60 per cent of their viewers were from Queensland, where NRL games rate higher than AFL.
Only about 23 per cent of the Imparja audience is from the Territory.
But Greatorex MLA Matt Conlan said the move was a ‘‘solid blow’’ for Territorians.
Despite the nightly Imparja news being replaced by a national news stream from Brisbane, Mr Feehan said the station was expanding its news service.
And he said it would use the money it saved from not buying Channel Ten to do it.
The broadcaster will employ two extra news teams on top of the two they already have.
