Captain position is over-rated in modern day AFL. More of a media figurehead than anything else.

With all the leadership groups, position line leaders, 49 different coaches, their role is more about being a morale leader rather than a decision maker.

As long as the captain is a bloke who won't shirk a contest their ability / skill / footy brains isn't really overly important. Would be more important that they hold high training / lifestyle standards, is someone in your group that can relate up and down the football department hierarchy, up and down the age demographic of the playing group.

The other side is the amount of 'say' a captain would have in the teams strategies, tactics, zones ectt would be very limited. Yes, they would have to be smart enough to understand them and communicate them but they wouldn't be the ones creating plans against oppositions.
