Have Thompson and Williams saved football?

Postby ORDoubleBlues » Mon Sep 24, 2007 1:52 pm

Might seem a bit over the top but it doesn't seem that long ago that some of us were ruing the spectacle it was becoming.
Even the Crows, who I barrack for, played an ordinary brand of football this year and that's frustrating given that that's been when the Crows have played their best football IMHO, when they've been attacking.
Williams and Thompson have both coached some negative footy in the past but they've taken the punt this year and let's hope it has a flow on effect throughout the competition.

Not so sure if they saved it but in regard to higher scores Geelong and Port led the way...
then came four teams not playing finals footy in fremantle, Essendon, Carlton and Western Bulldogs.
Followed by WCE, Hawthorn,Kangaroos, Sydney,Collingwood,Richmond,Brisbane,Adelaide, Melbourne
and the Saints were the lowest average goal kicking team in the comp...

Don't forget when Port played West Coast in week 1 of the finals .... 10 goals to 9 or something on a fine night

Even the total points scored on both the weekend's finals were 179 which is pretty good but not massive scoring - average of 90 points per team say 13 goals 12 points

Last year's GF WC v Syd had a combined points of 169

In fact the Crows / Hawks game had better scoring than the prelim finals ironically :wink:

So really how far have we come? I don't think the game was in need of saving personally but the Cats have been great in 2007 no doubt about it. And I'm still glued to the screen regardless :D

The Port V WCE game was a fine night,yes.The WCE had half a team and played behind the ball,trying to limit Port's scoring ability,also a yes.

Booney I am not having a dig at Port

I just don't buy in to this high scoring = better football thing at all

You do what you have to do to win as you say - especially in finals

Would the Cats prefer to kick 25 goals and lose, or kick 12 goals and WIN ..... there's the answer

Average goals per year scored by ALL clubs
2000 = 15.11
2001 = 14.17
2002 = 13.79
2003 = 13.76
2004 = 13.47
2005 = 13.85
2006 = 13.34
2007 = 13.78

Average goals scored by the top TWO goalkicking teams of those years
2000 = 19.3 & 17.7
2001 = 16.8 & 16.6
2002 = 16.6 & 15.6
2003 = 15.2 (both the same)
2004 = 16.4 & 16.2
2005 = 16.0 & 15.6
2006 = 15.5 & 15.1
2007 = 16.9 & 15.2

Geelong have come in third during that period behind Essendon & Carlton in 2000.
Port have recorded the equal second LOWEST average goals kicked per game out of
the top two teams per year for goals kicked.
For the teams to finish top/runner up of average goals kicked 5 of them have won a flag
(2000,2001,2002,2003 &2004).
