I have given evidence in a tribunal hearing for a work related matter and the first thing you get asked is "do you swear that what you say is the truth, etc .."

So it's a serious thing and I reckon the AFL is looking to make an example of Brown, as they did with $40K for Goodwin's gambling thing, so as to be a deterrent

Before we get the violins out too much for Brown - half of the $15K penalty is suspended - he only has to pay $7.5K now. For lying through his teeth to an official AFL tribunal hearing what does he expect - a medal for showing loyalty to an opponent who tried to gouge his eye out?

Hopefully, soon we will see players going to the tribunal and saying it like it is and then the culprit can cop his penalty sweet, as he should.

Imagine if someone dobbed on Dermie, Rhys Jones or Deittrich in the tribunal
back in the old days...Would've been great to watch the next time the teams played.

LOCK ON...TARGET ZOOMED...ELBOW READY...FULL STEAM AHEAD....FIST COCKED... [-X
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated

Seem the AFL were the only ones not aware of this common practice among the players???????

IMO, the quicker that 'lie for the sake of another player' stuff disappears from the footy culture, the better - getting to the right decision is more important for mine

Deep down I know I should be agreeing with you Hondo, but I just can't help but think of how un-Australian it is to try to land another player in hot water.

With the number of camera's around these days, why do they even need to question the infringed player?

True - can't see how the tribunal could take Brown's story and let Judd off when TV footage clearly showed Brown's reaction at the time it happenned. If they know the players lie, maybe just don't bother making them appear to give evidence.

My view is that 'dobbing' = going to the AFL and telling them about an incident that got missed. Once a player has been reported and appears before the tribunal, evidence given should be truthful IMO and that doesn't mean you are 'dobbing', just telling the truth. Why should a Judd or anyone get let off when they have done the wrong thing?

If I biffed you in a game, I wouldn't expect you to stick up for me 3 days later in a tribunal - I cop whatever penatly I deserve

Hondo.... Interesting point re the swearing in at ya work thing........... What is the procedure at the tribunal?..anyone know? Stat declaration or something like that? I consider the milking of frees as no better than a fib at the tribunal once the game is over myself.

Yes about 2 weeks pay, maybe less, but I do agree they have a limited time in which to earn it. They are probably being tough just as courts are when people commit perjury, because lying in evidence undermines the entire system.

Seriously you can shoot someone or rape someone and get less of a punishment these days. I don't for a second think that is appropriate but to fine a guy $15000 for protecting a bloke from being suspended from a game of football is just a joke. The AFL need to understand that the game deserves better than this.

By the way Psyber, do you really think Campbell Brown is on $390 000 per year?

I have no idea what he is on financially, actually, but they are all paid too much. I don't really support professional sport as a concept. They should have real jobs and play for the love of it. As I said elsewhere, I think the rate of bulking up, rate of recovery, and incidence of thinning hair on so many guys in their 20s points to widespread steroid abuse.

And, yes, I think the penalties for the criminal acts of murder and rape are far too soft, as are those for assault generally.

It's the Ned Kelly culture. To quote the song from the 1970s movie, "They say that Ned Kelly ain't never done wrong, but tell that to Lonergan's widow!"
