REB's 'Chubby' Cat Joel Selwood thread

Postby Rik E Boy » Wed Jul 04, 2007 4:42 pm

I found an interesting thread about Joel Selwood that has statistical comparisons with many top rated youngsters. You may remember that I razzed up the Port fans by stating that they were mad for taking Travis Boak ahead of Joel Selwood, who I said was a ready made league footballer who would go on to play in round one. Despite being howled down for cracking a 'chubby' about Selwood I was proven correct for once when Selwood duly debuted in the first round.

Some good points.

1. Selwood hasn't been tagged yet, although Delidio cops this regularly.
2. Selwood has been eased into a firing side, a luxury not afforded to Gibbs.
3. Selwood has had less ground time than players such as Pendlebury.

The thread states that Selwood is underrated but it doesn't worry me if he is, as long as he stays fit and firing for the mighty Catters!

How come he got dropped a couple of weeks ago?

Boak will be a very very very good footballer, seen plenty of him at the bay and has something special about him

Many Cat fans were asking that same question Dutchy, although the Cats do have that luxury at the minute of rotating players in and out of the side this season. Last year Tomahawk would have probably played every week. This was my point about Gibbs...Carlton simply can't afford him to run around around for the Northern Bullants now that Stevens has gone down..even if he didn't they probably couldn't afford to do this.

We have another handy midfielder of the future called Brent Prismall who can't get a game. This makes the decision to offload Maloney a worthy one to get the player who is currently our number one ruckman (yes, he was recruited to be a forward I know).

This thread should be book-marked for a return visit in 3 years time. It's too early IMO to make comparison assessments on first year players.

Firstly, I am not having a go at Travis Boak, merely pumping up Selwood. Secondly, the kid is a gun. He showed more experienced team mates (i.e. Joel Corey) how to get the hard ball when Essendon were playing well and the heat was on. Selwood won balls last night he had simply no right to win.

When the history of this group is written, I believe that Selwood will be rated ahead of Kelly and Corey. Bookmark that! ;)
